Earlier on someone unexpectantly rang the doorbell. I took my sweet Raycaon earphones out of my lugholes, stuffed them into my pockets instead of putting them into their case and hurried downstairs to open the door.
Outside were three blokes with a flatbed van. I looked at them quizzically. "We are here for the scaffolding" they said, not altogether helpfully. They wanted to put up scaffolding to do my roof. Which had been done recently, so I was wondering whether this was some kind of after sales service. I told them they should have given me a bit of notice because I had not been expecting anyone. Maybe they had the wrong address?
After checking the house number, street and postcode against their paperwork they came to the conclusion that yes, they were at the right address, but that they would ask the gaffer who had gone to the shops and would be back shortly.
After a few minutes the doorbell rang again. Turns out they were supposed to do the roof of the houses across the road.
When I was talking to them outside I had taken my keys with me because the last thing I need is getting locked out of the house. Unwisely I had stuffed them into the same pocket as the two earphones, one of which was now missing. I panicked and started searching the stairs and the hallway and eventually inspected the driveway.
Nothing. I began cursing the Roofer's Guild and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors.
As I turned back towards the house the missing earpiece fell out from the folds of my jersey.
Moral of the story: Don't call a roofer, they are all cursed. Sorry about that.
