There was an article in the G recently arguing quite convincingly that the whole idea of comedy having been changed by woke criticism (beyond v obvious B Manning / 70s stuff) is a bit of a myth.

"The most recent homicide statistics released by the Scottish Government back in October last year confirmed that Glasgow City had the highest number of homicide cases (12) in 2019-20,, representing 19% of the Scottish total. Glasgow City also had a higher share of homicides compared to its population (with 12% of the Scottish population in 2019)."
Those stats are surely affected by the Tories' cynical boundary changes in the 90s, which were designed to shrink the power of the city council. It therefore doesn't take account of all those in Bearsden and Milngavie who commute into the city to do their murders.
Bejabus Rolling, I think isolation is getting to you - blaming the high murder rate on Tories bussing in from outside the city is a bit of a stretch! Seriously, the murders are being committed in the Central Belt. The Scottish AND preceding governments have been ineffectual in dealing with this, particularly the link between deterrence of criminals dealing in drugs, consequential turf wars. Imo they have been only interested in containment (policing and punishment), and not in eradication (which involves educating the general folk about the consequences of drug use; i.e. if you use you're financing these parasitic bastards, giving over control of areas to the gangs). I had a medical historical atlas for the UK in 1986, which I gave to a Nursey studying for his exams, which showed the Central Belt on nearly all indicators (cancer, lung disease, heart failure etc etc) as being by far the worst in the UK. And that this isn't being determinedly addressed is literally a crying shame.

I was joking chumbles! Nobody who lives in Bearsden would want to go into Glasgow even if they had an urgent moyder to do.
BTW drugs policy is reserved not devolved, and the Tories have blocked various initiatives shown to work elsewhere eg safe injection sites.

PS the central belt life expectancy thing is a known phenomenon- the Glasgow Effect, sometimes the Scotland Effect. What puzzles the boffins about it is that it holds true even if you compare like with like - so a middle class library IT professional in Glasgow, say, will have a lower life expectancy than their opposite number in Liverpool, even if they have never touched drink, drugs, banana chews or Jazz apples. There is no consensus on what the underlying causes are.

General lack of sunlight is the biggest killer in Scotland, I agree. Tories trying to make hay about it is a bit much, party of the milk snatcher and 5million% against any nutritional meals for kids from poorer families. Universal Credit cutting bastards.

The amount of mountains over 1000m might have something to do with it aswell. I went a bit north and did 2 munros at the start of the week and consider myself lucky to have survived.

Glaswegians regarding stabbing each other as a perfectly normal hobby probably doesn't help.

'Allo 'Allo!Hard to see 'Allo 'Allo! being commissioned now - in the '80s WWII was still within direct memory for many, and René Artois, played by Gorden Kaye, was brilliant. My mother was a devotee, so I got to watch it when I visited. But it's chock full of sexual and racial stereotyping, planting its big, genial, farcical feet all over the faces of the woke generation. And some of it is still, to me, very funny. Essentially, it's a farce where gender, racial and other stereotypes are switched around so that everyone gets the mickey taken out of them. I liked it all the more because I was still wandering around France in my Summer vacations, and painfully aware that we as a nation were conforming to our stereotype, (you don't understand? Let me shout louder) much more than they.

I believe vitamin D deficiency is one plausible theory. Compared with Norway, for example? I think comments about lack of care are likely true, but to my mind pollution, inadequate housing are much more likely. I believe that the only real solution is for Scotland to be independent.

A reverse Hadrian’s wall. Just build a trench separating Scotland from England from East coast to West coast, let the sea fill it and cast Scotland adrift.
Then I’ll pole vault across it to escape.

The historically high social investment of the Scandi governments must make a difference. Norway is the richest country in the world per capita. We blew our oil money on making loads of people unemployed in the 80s.

I was confused why Tallinn is on the list. It's been a while, but last time I was there I was under the impression that the main threat was to vampires thanks to the breath taking Estonian garlic bread. I could certainly murder some of that with a large beer right now. www.happyfoodstube.com/dry-fried-garlic-sourdough-soldiers-kuuslauguleivad/It turns out that all larger Baltic cities have quite high murder rates (by European standards) that are similar to Glasgow's. Still, it's all relative if one compares it to the US, where currently the city with the highest murder rate is St Louis with a murder rate of 69.40. (I have a friend who lives in St Louis. Now I worry about her.)
