I'm the Breton with mainly a classic sword & shield (or sword & magic) combination (which is why I didn't necessarily think of employing a two-handed weapon), but as Scubar points out it is very difficult not to end up as a sneak archer because it presents itself as the optimal strategy in most situations. The sneak archer is incredibly OP at points, there are few things in Skyrim more enjoyable than making a sneak shot from some distance and watching the person drop off the wall or tower, or bridge. Then going over and seeing That said it's good to have the sword/shield backup approach. Plenty of times you won't have the sneak option or you may have more than one oppo present. It also adds a bit of variety. It does mean that you have to spread your skill points round a bit. Someone on a very dedicated forum looked into the critical hits skill tree options for both one-handed and archery and realised it's largely useless. Apparently it's calculated on the base damage of the weapon, nothing else. In one handed it's prob best to go with the first option (armsman). Archery is a bit better, but I just stick with the overdraw option. I tend to find myself getting squishy so the light armour/block skill trees help a tad. Plus the obvious smithing/enchanting timesink. |
