We're going to be eating a vegetarian haggis tonight. Is is cultural appropriation? I never remember any mention of Burns Night prior to the year 2000. It certainly feels like the rest of Britain are keen to celebrate it these days. But how can it be appropriation? Scotland’s part of the British Isles, ergo it should be alright for Welsh, Irish, and English Britons to take part, shouldn’t it? I bet Owen Jones has something to say about it. Or George Monbiot. While sipping latte.

Morning all.
Day two of the Big Disruption Project. No, no, it has nothing to do with Classic Dom - it’s the replacement of our kitchen and Other Works.
The old kitchen is now in the back garden, and work has begun on chipping away the chimney cladding in the living and dining rooms.
I feel like I’m living like a student. Boiling a kettle on the bedroom floor, washing things up in the bath… it’s wild, man. Wild.
TVblog: no chance, it’s not even on the wall anymore.
Warhermitblog: some painting of blacks to prepare for metal work. I also began on some white blocking, for future bright colours.

Morning! Cold out there today. Luckily I have my mountain of Baxters and Heinz soup tins to warm my cockles. None of that Crosse & Blackwell muck. Cocklealeekie soup?

I never remember any mention of Burns Night prior to the year 2000. I used to drink whisky on 25 January from about 1990 onwards.

That doesn't necessarily distinguish it from other nights.

Hullo.
Films: Watched 12 Monkeys recently and most of Snatch last night. All the Brads.
Wordle: Not really feeling it, I've lost the competitive edge.
Tuffers: Is a dead man.
OTTM: I have spoken to my interwebz provider apropos the new router NOT arriving after 2 weeks. I don't really need it, but it was free (p&p extra).
As you were.

I'm happy for our English cousins to try out our Burns night and Scottish culture. If we wanted to try Morris Dancing, voting Tory or incest they wouldnt mind either.

I'm not sure Morris Dancing and incest are two separate things.

Amipal and lazybones on the bam-up there. Lovely.
Why don't you celebrate Shakespeare night with some Morris dancing and some pie n mash? Do you hate England?
Burns night has become another 'holiday' or celebration, like St Patrick's night.

Is there anything actually authentically Scottish? Whisky, heather haggis, kilts, mountains. All just invented to take money off cairngormless tourists.

I went to a big Burns night ceilidh in Kent in about 1998, seemingly organised by locals of Scotch descent. There was a polite dancing show by the local retired ladies, a Geordie guy played the Northumbrian pipes, and fish and chips were provided from the takeaway next door. It was in a Conservative club, and someone had covered up all the paintings of Margaret Thatcher with towels. Very thoughtful. 4 stars.

Rolling Escargot has even joined the Tories. What could be more authentically Scottish than that?

Using the dark theme for the first time. Happy now?
Trying to be clever in line 3. Didn't work.
Today is not only Burns Night but also the (round) birthday of the grandkids' mother, so celebratory haggis on this day has been in our family forever. I'm a great believer in cultural appropriation; I'm happy to appropriate anything of cultural value, which automatically excludes Morris dancing and/or incest. Still, I was surprised to be asked by English friends for my recipe for neeps & tatties and how to tame a wild haggis. But now my PM is no longer here to pipe in the haggis and I'm not sure I'm up to the task myself. I'll stick with the whisky for now, I guess. Slàinte mhath.

Our bottle of Scottish whisky got ‘taken in’ by a neighbour. Only it isn’t clear which one. By the look of the photo DPD sent it was a neighbour in a different building… somewhere near the postcode.
