There was also talk, at my school - well the primary school I went to - of a ghost called the Black Bulldog. But people seemed unclear as to what it was. It didn’t necessarily manifest as a bulldog. No-one knew because just seeing it would kill you. That seemed to be the consensus.

In my childhood, we use to go down to Devon and stay at a farmhouse during the summer holidays. My uncle had previously stayed down there as a youth, and said that he’d seen a ghost climb out from under his bed, and walk out of the bedroom.
I always worried about this whenever we arrived, but after a couple of days it passed out of thought.

My schools were all too modern for ghosts; the nearest that we came was Ravenhill and his gang of thugs who would lurk outside the back gate and exact a toll or you would get a kicking. As it was, the cut the back gate opened onto was a mile off any route home. This was bloody tiresome and sometimes very frightening. One of my rites of passage was organising a much larger group of blokes my size to follow me out, so that when I told them to fuck off and they went after me, my lads jumped them (once Ravenhill's bullies had me cornered). After they got sorted out a few times in school as well, they lost interest. I hate bullies. On other matters: Oatmeal has been working on a cartoon series for Netflix which looks interesting. Stellar cast! |
