My NAS died some while back. For replacement I'm looking at Synology DS220J with x2 WD Redplus 2TB. Works with Linux and there's a phone app. Mainly for storing music. Any reasons not to ? Other than I probably shouldn't be buying it in the first place as there are more important things I should be spending money on.

I could save money by having one bay. But then I'd be in the position I'm in now, old one died and I've lost all its contents. Am I right in thinking that with 2 bays the data is saved to both, so if one fails I'll still have access to the other drive.

I know nothing of such matters, Mr Lark. Perhaps Sheep or Crank can assist.

Depends on your Raid setup - but yes it can work like that. The Synology will also backup to the cloud over night as an extra safety feature. Amazon glacier is very cheap.
Someone here has a Synology - possibly two folk

Ok.... I've had a read about RAID. It might be that what I want is a single bay NAS and then back up to a USB hard drive.

Pretty much my setup, (but I'm paranoid, so have an 8Tb file PC, an old HP Gen-8* so have 2 back ups of all data). But as with all such, it relies on doing the back ups regularly... I have 2+Tb of audiobooks alone, so this all takes time. Hmm, I'd better do one this weekend...

Morning dweebs
Went for a nice walk in the autumnal sunshiiiiiiine earlier, just a t-shirt was needed. Global warming my arse. Along the way I took in the Bhaji shop and picked up 3 onion bhajis and 3 veg samosas. Next up, the butchers (chicken breasts and bacon). Finally the co-op (booze). My rucksack was like a soldiers bergen for the walk home. I now have a chicken curry on the hob.
Gamez. Going to carry on with King of amalur later. Enjoyed it last night. Although just before switching it off I found a mine. Had a quick peek, but decided to leave it for another time. I'm sure nothing dangerous is waiting for me down there.
OTTM, think I might have a corn or something on the underside of my foot. Feels like I've permanently got a stone in my sock/shoe when I walk. Pretty painful actually. Oh well, I had a good innings.

Really? LINK??? Reconditioned on Amazon Marketplace, with NO discs = 0tb there's one available at a grand... and it has Windows 2003 Server - which reached end-of-life in 2015 and is unsupported. I moved mine onto Windows 10 and setup each of the 4 x 2tbs as persistent network drives. There is a diskless Celeron one on e-Bay for £259 from alexey_grachev 😎...

muffrat: if you have an old PC, you can repurpose it to act as a NAS or File server... I got the HP-Gen 8 because it fitted the physical space that I had. It was clearance stock from eBuyer, reused some drives... I later bought the 4 x 4tb driver and w10 stuff etc. If you're used to PCs and understand how they are put together, it's only time you need and relatively small amounts of cash. You can do this. My box was in place of a 4bay 4 x 2tb Synology, which was a fucker to administer and I realized after a while that I was not doing back ups because of that. I sold the Synology and reused the 2tb drives, upgrading later as my audiobooks stuff would require splitting across 2 discs. Just punt around on t'internet... here's Mr Potato Head to explain his version of how to do it...

I have a 4 bay Synology NAS. Though only 2 bays are currently used.
I use it as a music server. It is excellent. I have about 16 TB on it the back up is other HDs I am thinking of getting 2 more 10 TB disks and maybe an 18 TB disk to replace an 8TB disk. But the prices are astronomical at the moment.
I would recommend as much storage as possible.

I have a 2-bay Synology. I like it. It was fiddly to set up to get everything to work, but it seems functional and reliable.
You might want to consider getting two different hard drives, or even repurposing an old one and combining with a new one. That way they're less likely to fail near simultaneously.
Synologys can also be set up to back up to each other, so you could use two 1-bay drives in different locations to act as a raid array.
If you're into that sort of weird shit, I understand they can also act as remote file servers, web servers, email servers etc.

You are all crazy. Just buy a subscription to Amazon Music instead.
And yet when it comes to gaming you all play on those silly plastic boxes.
