There’s a book out soon by Annalee Newitz, a regular contributor to New Scientist.
Called “The Terraformers”, this paragraph from the review had me chuckling.
Destry is an environmental ranger on patrol across a planet under construction, a world being terraformed over millennia by a galactic real estate corporation. Her partner, a moose named Whistle, missed the boat on the intelligence assessment*, and is classed not as a person, but as a Mount.
*animals and humans are equal, as long as the animal can pass said assessment.

I liked the Banshees of Inisherin. Then I read people on the Guardian website saying it was pretty much just a metaphor for the Irish Civil War. A few people were pretty adamant. Like that’s all it was.
I’m not sure. I mean if that’s the case then what part of the conflict did the barman stand for? What about the policeman? What about the donkey?

I think it is intended to be a metaphor for the civil war, otherwise why would the relationship between the two men be so unrealistic? It's more like a fairy tale than a story about real people. But it was a really bad metaphor as well. I think the donkey must stand for the encroachment of imperialism into the domestic sphere or something, but it was hard to tell as the performance was so one dimensional. |
