Goats cheese and beetroot baguette with heinz tomato cup o soup today. OTTM: Have booked a long weekend in Palermo for late April. First time me and Mamifere Preferre will have had a break together since last April, so looking forward to it. Its been on my mind to propose wedlock to her for a while, but Im not sure about going for it on holidays. she might prefer a more 'everyday' but still romantic style of thing. What if she says no? Then it will be a shit holiday. I think the admission of Heinz tomato cup-o-soup is a far more pressing matter.

Resistance might be futile but sleep is at the moment. Apparently 18-04 is a late shift and not a night. Oh well the crazies have been out a bit tonight. Anyone know when the next full moons is? My mum worked for the CPS, and always said that things got busier during a full Moon. Lunatics are a real thing. Rod hull and adjacent sales go up during a full moon too. They plan their logistics around it. Perhaps a metaphor for… Good morning! Tazza has once again been phelobotomised and failed tests for fussy eater disease and bone blight. Apparently according to the doctor it’s weak blood, so I’ve got some massive pills to compensate. Games - already tried the resident weevil 4 demo , as I said, moribund. They’ve made it easier to move but compensated by making the aiming terrible.

What about taking a cup o soup with me to Palermo, concealing the ring in the sachet somehow and asking her to make me one at some appropriate moment ( perhaps during some pillow talk). If the cup o soup was mushroom I could include a little note about marrying a fun guy or something. I bet no-one has ever proposed that way before.

Also a lot of the right wing papers are explaining that Starmer arranged a tax free pension arrangement for himself whilst being in charge of the Crown Prosecution Service. Which is pretty terrible, why should certain tax laws be relaxed for certain individuals and professions (such as doctors, which is what Labour said they would do whilst bringing back the LTA limit).
The whole thing stinks.

Keir Starmer's pension affairs will be complicated. The contributions made while he was DPP don't count towards his lifetime allowance. He will still pay tax on his pension from that period when he draws it. The unfortunate bit for the Tories is that they passed the relevant legislation in 2013. It's a bit odd to criticise your own legislation.
As an MP Starmer will benefit from the MPs pension scheme which is pretty generous. If he becomes PM he will also be entitled to a £115,000 a year payment for life. Not too shabby.

The doctors' scheme has a specific problem. If a doctor earns over £120,000 (i think)they are taxed on the uplift in the value of their pension each year. The uplift counts as part of their income, but they don't know what the increase is until the end of the tax gear. The problem is that £1 of income at the trigger point leads to several thousand £ of tax becoming due. So a doctor who knows they are near that point is incentivised not to do any more work. Which with the NHS desperately short of staff is stupid.
I don't think it is ideal and it really only applies to well off doctors, but I think it's better to reform the rules and get experienced doctors to keep working than to encourage them to retire.
It's a badly drawn up scheme. It shouldn't have a single point where all the tax becomes due.

It's a badly drawn up scheme. It shouldn't have a single point where all the tax becomes due. As far as I amare they have the same pension tax rules as the rest of us. The uplift you mention is the annual allowance, basically the difference in the accrued pension per annum compared to the previous year which is multiplied by 16 (from memory). Where this figure exceeds £40k (soon to be £60k) the excess is taxed at the marginal rate of tax. Therefore anyone, doctor or not, who has exceeded the allowance has a tax charge. Over the years I have been responsible for hundreds of workers who have exceeded this and paid the tax (where they didn't have sufficient carry forward from the previous years). They all accepted it though, they were earning good money and they had generous pensions on the whole.

Their pension schemes operate under slightly different rules. It's a historic feature of the NHS. Other people may have similar issues. Also it isn't just whether contributions plus change in value exceed the annual allowance. There is also de minimis income limit before this applies to them. The tax system is full of odd anomalies.
