I thought dressing up as an animal was only for 1970s people who want to surreptitiously grope young people. I can see that. I haven’t got any of those connotations with a gorilla suit, which feels more like mimetic art than clown-like ‘fun’. And the thing is … I do find people in gorilla suits quite funny. I can’t help it. And this is how I got into the situation. I’ve long wanted to get a gorilla suit and muck about in a park. Maybe even perform a bigfoot ‘hoax’. I told this to the pm the other night and she suggested I do this for her nephew’s birthday. Her sister in law encouraged this and this morning we went into a fancy dress shop, just out of curiosity. It then kind of took on its own logic and I’m going to be dressed as a lion… |

What are the chances of there being a Russian submarine out there right now? Periscope up, watching the proceeds of the Eurovision Song Contest. Waiting to cause mischief. The RN are very highly-regarded for keeping tabs on Russian subs. In the Cold War, the navy was focussed on ASW and tracking in order to defend the GIUK Gap. The majority of the surface fleet of frigates are still the ASW-fitted Type 23s from the end of the Cold War, and we have arguably the best hunter-killer submarines (Astute) in the world. I saw a Royal Navy warship tucked away behind the Eurovision Village Stage. Our Boys. |

I’m in the same hotel as Eurovision hotshot Kääriä, from Finland. He’s being interviewed on a table 20 feet away. I’m here with a lion suit in a binbag. I would like to wish him well. Maybe? I don’t know …

I once almost had on a gorilla suit. But I lost the coin toss and had to wear the chicken suit instead. Was for a friend's hen do and we were dancing in a pub with a boombox.

lazybones - if you're hob-nobbing with the stars, get yourself to the Sapporo on Duke Street. It's an experience, but there are a lot of flames about, so check the fur-suit for flammability. Are you lodging in the Radisson? If so, make my apologies to the barman, who happily served me and a couple of mates most of a bottle of Louis XIII brandy at house-double prices, instead of the going rate which was about £80 for a single measure. He probably doesn't work there anymore after that though.

Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vanguard has left Devonport dockyard.
She had been due for a three and a half year refit which turned into seven and a half years, due to Scubar. Thank fuck he left.
She will rejoin the UK's nuclear deterrent force after trials and training, said a bloke down the pub.
