gongfarmer - your mate need to play the addiction card. He has a mental health problem, and so his employer should have a duty to support him, rather than demonise him. Say he's going to AA etc

Who is DB?
Being asleep at a workstation doesn’t seem so bad. Lunch on the floor though? I guess as long as he cleared it up.

I feel wiped out.
I had a few drinks last night. Well, two and a half in town - London town - and two big margaritas when I got home. The alcohol went to my head ...
I’m now wondering what it would be like to go into work, eat some lunch at my desk and fall into such a swoon of pleasure, the lunch falls from my lap and onto the floor. The good life.

Maybe we're in some sort of time loop. Lazy goes in to work and drunkenly falls asleep at his desk. As his lunch slides to the floor he decides to change his name to Dazy Bones
Later on this evening gongfarmer gets a phone call....

I don't think the lunch slides from your lap. I think it projectile vomits from your gub. But I might have misunderstood.
Hello.
Went to a pals last night to help him sort out some paperwork for grant applications as he's taken on an apprentice in his business.
I also managed a re-up on the chew front which was a marvelous turn up for the books.
My pal has been seeing someone. He Informed me last night she has the same name as his ex-wife. Which I suppose stops you shouting out the wrong name in the throes of passion.
Sunny here. Heading to the corner shop for Morton's rolls for lunch once I finish my coffee.
Games. No. TV. After Party S2.

Gongfarmer
I think a lot may depend on whether he is generally a good employee.
When I first started in audit work we had a client in south London. As part of their accounts team they had an Irish bookkeeper. He was a nice guy. Quiet chap, but helpful about 50. It was one of the first places U went to. The second or third year he wasn't there and they didn't know where he was. Mid way through the second week he phoned up. Apparently his brother had come over from Ireland and they'd gone for a beer and this had turned in to a two week bender.
This wasn't the first time this had happened, that he'd go for a drink and it would turn in to a ridiculous session lasting weeks. Anyway they didn't sack him, as he was usually a very reliable employee. The next time I was there he was very apologetic about not having ben there before. It was all a bit embarrassing. He was about twice my age, I didn't know him that well and I had absolutely no idea what to say. Especially as this was in an open office with several other people around.
Moral. Make yourself useful. Then they will put up with a surprising amount.

Good morrow.
Got a rude letter from my bank today saying I need to call them to talk about why I'm continually in my overdraft like some sort of teenager.
I could make the case that I'm a public sector worker raising a child on a single salary but I may make a case that I'm being cancelled for my political beliefs.
Luckily my Coutts account is fine, doing well.

It's true. The last time I found someone committing gross misconduct, I didn't sack them, as the person was 1) likeable, and 2) has a particular skill-set I need (despite being a muppet in various other ways).
The people you want to be shot of rarely actually break the rules. I find a conversation beginning with the words "This isn't really working, is it?" followed up with a very uncomfortable over-long discussion about how we can support each other to work better together to make it work usually does the trick.

I was on the train to London a couple of days ago and a guy got on and sat next to me at Leicester, he was on conference calls throughout (calling everyone "shit" or "wankers") and necked 4 cans on Kronenbourg on the way to another meeting in London. Guy was absolutely steaming upon arrival in London.
So my question is, which one of you was that then?

Well obviously if you need his very particular skill set. I just doubt that you really need a super trained killer to be your underling. And if you do you really ought to have gone for Steven Seagal anyway.
