TV chat: I am on season 2 of 'For all Mankind' Is kind of boring but I like the alternative history where we did a lot better at space travel and going to moon. Feels like it could have happened.

TV Chat: None. Went to see Billy Bragg gig last night. It was very good. Mostly his better known stuff. I think age has mellowed him somewhat, apart from the bits when it really hasn't. 4*

Scamanderblog Stardate 44 BB
TV (technically iPlayer) Caesar I watched all 3 episodes over the last two nights.
I thought it was reasonably interesting, but fundamentally flawed in that it didn't really place Caesar in context. I don't think Marius or Sulla or the social war of the 80s or the civil war and proscriptions through the 80s BC were mentioned at all. Neither was it made clear how far the career of Pompey breached the conventions and rules of Rome well before Caesar did.
The BBC made it seem like Caesar came out of nowhere to destroy the Roman Republic. He didn't. It had been tottering since the war against Jugurtha in the 100s BC. The careers of Marius and Sulla with the civil wars and vast conquests in Bithynia were a clear precursor to Caesar and Pompey. The Roman Republic simply couldn't cope with the empire. Successful generals simply became too wealthy and too powerful and the consular system couldn't cope. The vast armies serving for several years under one general didn't help.
I also thought the program was unduly nice to Cato. I see him much more as a William Rees Mogg figure than a great defender of the Republic. He was vastly out of date in his ideas. He was also an insufferable twat from what I can see. He clearly had very little idea and made no real attempt to accommodate the ambitions of the newly powerful men. In attempting to destroy Caesar and stop Pompey he made it clear that they couldn't have a future within the system. To a great extent Cato actually caused the Civil War, by making it impossible for Caesar to return to Rome from Gaul.
I agree Caesar was overly ambitious, but so were Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Crassus, Quintus Sertorius. I think Caesar stood out mainly because he won the Civil War and similar problems would have occurred if Pompey had won.
Got to go. Got double Classics now.

All that hiding in wardrobes and jumping out to beat his employer up can't have helped either.

I stood next to Billy Bragg in a pub once. He was much smaller than I expected.

Gruff Rhys was in the crowd for the support act at his show last week. I wasn't quite sure it was him at the time. It looked like him, but he had a hat on and was wearing a scarf. He was standing at the back and was surprisingly tall, about 6'2". He clearly didn't want to be disturbed. He disappeared as soon as the support ended.
He was wearing the same hat on stage, but not the coat or scarf.

Halfway through early Christmas break as working the actual day this year. Will see if anything good on TV or film later, guess I should try and get things organised before the days and things are shut.

In 1996, I saw the then Grimsby Town manager, Brian Laws, in a bar. I didn't talk to him and nothing of note happened in the few seconds we were within six feet of each other.

No, but I took in Hussein Mohamed Bisad's asylum claim. Massive hands.
His Mum was tiny, though.

When I was a small boy I attended the Woof end of filming party. It was a lovely warm summer evening and the venue was a nice cottage by some lakes. I got to meet the cast and play outside until dark. Then later I got to meet the dog, when I was alone with it I whispered "can you please turn into a boy now?" But he didn't, the stupid, furry bastard.
