It seems staggeringly obvious that governments in both countries could solve a lot of problems by taxing wealth. But instead we get reduced winter fuel payments and frozen tax bands. Probably another wave of cuts to welfare too.

But that's a good reason to tax wealth, it would ultimately reduce the value of those vastly overpriced properties, equalise the cost South Vs North, make it easier for young people to buy houses etc .. |

A tax on the rise in value of homes when they are sold would work.
Also council tax should be much higher at the top end. It's not been updated since it was set up in 1991.
Band H is equivalent to a house worth £350,000 in 1991. It doesn't catch the boom in expensive properties built since then or the massive rise in house prices, especially in the South East.
Property taxes have the advantage that unlike other forms of wealth property can't be hidden as the tax accrues to whoever owns the property.

Raise beef tax.
Raise tax on alcohol sold in shops but reduce tax on alcohol bought in pubs.

Seem to remember reading that the 1% who own the the largest % of wealth in the world includes all of us in that 1%. The vast majority of the world's population live under the poverty level and us being a wealthy nation have far more wealth than most.
