Kid 1 is showing kid 2 how to play Roblox. It's been a tense time, lots of shouting and arguing.

Have finally isolated the issue with my sweet audio setup: there's something loose inside the amp causing the right channel to flicker in and out. There's nobody near here who fixes them, it's 40 years old, and a quick look on ebay suggests it's worth the square root of fuck all anyway. I also don't want to kill myself by trying to fix it myself.
So, what's the script with your modern amps/media streamers? Can you get one which will i) take my phono/RCA turntable; ii) take my sweet, sweet, MASSIVE unpowered speakers with their old school bare wire connectors; and iii) also stream stuff through my WiFi from Spotify and from my NAS?
Does such a device exist in this world, or have I got completely the wrong end of the stick here? Imagine, if you can, that you are being asked this by a complete imbecile.
In case you're wondering why I don't just ask the lads in Curry's, I tried that earlier with limited success.

What impedance are the speakers? Yes, lots of amps still have phono stages. Or you can purchase a phono pre-amp (cheap or v. Expensive, the choice is yours.) and plug into standard RCA. E.g. www.richersounds.com/fosi-audio-box-x1-black/As for the wiring of the speakers, you can add banana clips easily enough. Don't you want to try fixing it yourself? Does it have obvious screws to open it? The speaker attachment might be an easy fix. You just need to avoid the capacitors as they hold a charge even when switched off. They can give you a cheeky wee shock. If you unplug, then press the power on and off a couple of times it should discharge them. |

When fixing electronics make sure all power is on, lick anything sparking and stick a fork in the wall socket to make sure it works.
Then poke or shake things until they work.

Probably soldering etc needed. A lot of dust from the 90s still in there too. Speaker label says 8 Ohms impedance, 25 W RMS input, whatever that means. I thought they sounded great, but looking online they sell for virtually nothing. Maybe I should just jack the lot in and get with the times... I'm not going to spend like a hifi nerd but I don't want to get something shite either. Basically, I'm looking for the amp equivalent of an 8.99 bottle of wine. No idea what that equates to. Less than 500 quid I hope. |

You can get something with a phono stage like that: amzn.eu/d/h8OOmN0But no modern streaming smarts. Or you can get something like this: amzn.eu/d/jka7v09Which has the streaming smarts but no phono stage. An amp like the first one you can add a streamer to a later date. The second one you could add a preamp. I'm not saying buy either of those - but that's your two options. To get both phono and streaming might cost more than your budget. I'd check the what hifi website and richer sounds to see what's available. The specs will tell you the output ohms and rms. You need one that will put out 8ohms. |
