I'm glad Chumbles didn't appear to notice the Human League video last night I thought someone had opened the windows on them ages ago... I'm probably one of the only folk here who's trudged their way through the dire game from which they nicked a faction name... bunch of Gary Numan wannabees, though why anyone should ...

Real talk on real names!
Where even to start? First of all, I guess, is that I want to protect not only myself but also my partner, who didn't sign up for any of this. Even my first name is easily recognisable, and I work in a small field where everyone knows everyone else on a global scale. It's none of their business what I get up to in a forum like this.
I have seen enough people (mostly women) being driven off the internet by online stalkers. I myself don't use any other social media, neither facebook nor twitter, for good reason.
I don't want to go into details what kind of funny things can happen in the workplace because there are legally binding NDAs... which I shouldn't even have mentioned... but I can assure you that it takes only one managerial change to turn your pleasant work environment into a hellhole. Facts get twisted, people you have trusted and supported are lying about you and your rights are trampled on. Sure, you can take it to court and you will win, but the stress is going to take its toll on your health. The last thing you want is having your internet presence taken out of context and used against you.
And if that's not enough to put you off the idea of waiving your anonymity then try having to visit and work or even live in dictatorial countries. In our line of work we are dealing with countries like Turkey, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Voicing your opinion on the internet under your real name is a luxury one cannot afford there.
Crimewatch is no longer a thing, but I could have easily given the police an anonymous tip that Smellavision* was their man in a cold case of rape and murder. They would have come knocking on your door and, even if they would be sympathetic, would cause you a great deal of stress. I know because that's what's happened to my partner and me. Some disgruntled arsehole did this. Was probably pissed and thought it was funny at the time.
What you are telling me about Glen shows that real names are not an obstacle to voicing shitty opinions.
I would never block anyone unless they are harassing me privately. Even then I would rather bring this to admin's attention and expect it to be dealt with. I would always try and change someone's shitty opinion, but if stuff like racism or homophobia is tolerated for too long I would rather leave the forum.
And, as Felice said, real names are boring.
* It's your choice, but I really, really don't like addressing anyone here by their real name, and I'm sorry to see that you have changed your handle here.

I surf the internet looking for suitable pictures for my comments, knowing that some of you haven't quite made escape velocity from the soundbite and the picture book and need illustrations. Just occasionally the net snags on something truly remarkable:

Re: Glen Ah, well, sounds like he's off having a long hard think then.
I went into town this morning to get a haircut and exchange some currency. It was very cold and very damp. A hot sausage role had life-giving qualities.

Windsor Davies is dead. Quite a shock for those of us who hadn't realised he was still alive.

A Star Is Born - whole premise out me off that film You could also say it shows the hypocrisy and misogyny of the music business. A manager who sees Ally sing with Jackson tells her she’s talented and has something special – then proceeds to make her over. Some of the criticism is that she is forced to go on stage by him to sing her song. “How dare he tell her what to do” – if it was a female doing this to her who had spotted her talent would there be the same uproar? No it’s not perfect but I don’t think it’s as bad as made out. Opinions worth waiting for I’m sure you’ll agree. Lentil, split pea & carrot soup for lunch. My daughter has a friend over this afternoon so hopefully some switch time. Hadn't noticed you'd changed your name. Just shows you I only look at the pictures.

After that lunch I imagine you won't have too much trouble getting the room to yourself. Lots of fibre. Though the fibre does contribute, it's more the sugars in various beans, pulses and peas that cause fartiness. Some of the sugars in those foods are difficult to digest, and it produces gas when they are broken down in the gut.

I have never played Octopus Travails, though I thought I was starting to get a grip on understanding it from reading posts on here, but Tent Hen's latest screed about it seems utterly opaque even to those of us* who have been following her posts closely.

Re: Glen Ah, well, sounds like he's off having a long hard think then. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have much effect. He once took umbrage at one of my more innocent comments, disappeared for "a long hard think" which allowed him to research new ways to jam his foot firmly in his mouth ...

amipal have you been to Copenhagen yet, and if so have you got any tips for cheap / good places to eat? Cheap places: Not Copenhagen. The prices there are eye watering. Particularly if you like a beer. They were charging about £5 a pint over 20 years ago.

I went to Copenhagen a couple of years ago, and after paying about 8 quid for a pint tried to tell the barman how expensive it was compared to the UK. I don't think he really understood, which wasn't hugely surprising given his English was far betterer than mine.

I like to keep my online accounts separate and anonymous as much as possible, it allows you to be honest about things you wouldn't otherwise. If its a group for a small set of friends who know each other in real life that's sort of different, and not really something I'm interested in getting involved in.
As for homophobia/racism, the chatterbox was very good at self policing that kind of thing and I hope we can keep doing that here.
Some of you lot might enjoy resetera, which has an absolutely zero tolerance to anything like that policy. Its enormous so a bit impersonal, but you can also find whole communities in single forum threads about specific topics, like the Switch eShop, all sorts of stuff. edit: case in point, someones posted a thread with a picture of every bed in FFVII.

I can understand why anyone with a recognisable name or any sort of public profile would want to remain anonymous. Indeed my sheep was careful to remain fairly discreet on the internet for a while, not wanting to be identified by my then employer. One of the big advantages of the gamesblog on the G was it was both public and fairly obscure. I was mildly, but not entirely surprised when Shenguin discovered I was hiding there. It was the sort of place he was bound to stick his nose into eventually.
