Wait, those places on the Diplomacy map are real? Yes, yes they are; it's only America that's mythical ... Films/TV: I wanted to like Carnival Row - a sort of cross between His Dark Materials and Steampunk by way of the League of EG, but it's very very grey and after half an hour the characters seem to be amalgams of ill-fitting stereotypes. The wicked wealthy are simply unpleasant, unthinking class caricatures, the police = uniformed thugs and the bulk of the sort of ordinary folk who would normally populate a world are missing. So far it feels hollow, like a model of a meal: initially looks appetizing, but without flavour and unsatisfying and ultimately rather unpleasant.  Cleverly put together, excellent SFX, but empty and uncaring. They're a collection of stick figures with distinctive funny hats so you can quickly identity them, but not with them. And these are the good guys ffs. Very bleak. I suspect I may not get through the first episode |
