tenthenemy - we're in the pre-lockdown panic period where the world and their monkey starts mashing F5 repeatedly. I noticed summat similar as I was trying to get on Tesco's website to amend this week's order. "User reports indicate Virgin Media is having problems since 12:26 AM" GMT. Are you also affected? Leave a message in the comments." Virgin Broadband is having a big advertising campaign right now. Maybe they should have monkey-proofed their enterprise before they take on new customers.

Fuck Friday. Fuck every day on which an inanimate whale doesn't prevent a train disaster.

Lunchblog: leftover yorkshires, stuffed with leftover lamb, and drizzled on leftover mint sauce. A lunch for the gods. 4* Well Jell! Corned beef sandwich. Quavers.

Preferred Mammal and myself watched Nightmare Before Christmas yesterday. I’ve had the songs in my head ever since.

Personally i quite like grunge and industrial metal so the appalling earworm and the inner scream are often identical.

Talking of libraries... BooksChildren of Ash and ElmIt's a very 2020s popular academic history book* about Vikings. Apparently they were pretty tolerant for the most part, but were like the Romans. Receiving was not a publicly acceptable option for a man. It occasionally led to both giver and receiver being buried in a bog. Mostly though if you raped and pillaged you could do it however you liked. Four stars. Do you like books about Vikings? Yes, yes you do. Recommended * By which I mean it's written to be read, unlike traditional academic history which was at best written to be studied and at worst written to prove the writer was more intelligent than the reader. Not to one up sheep2 but to one up sheep2 I’ve read a review of that book in the London review of books and so don’t even need to read it.

Tom Shippey's review? It was pretty good. It alerted me to the existence of the book.
The LRB is the best. A combination of some ace stuff, some gobbledygook and some stuff which is so dense I have no idea if it is ace or gobbledygook. I don't read the articles on the biographies of poets or artists by and large. Particularly if I haven't heard of them before

I would very much like to gift a sub to Danky. At the very least it would shut him up for a while.

Could somebody please briefly review Tom Shippey's review of the book? That way I don't have to read the review, or the book, or several of the posts on today's chatterbox. Thx.

I'm extremely disappointed to discover it's not the banger equivalent of Burger King.
*grabs dictaphone*
"... Lynne, cracking idea for a chain of restaurants, get the dog from the walls adverts and Marcus trescothick** down here pronto.."
**nothing to do with his tackle, he is affectionately known as 'banger' to his team mates due to his love of sausages.
If you gave to explain it Tuffers, then its either not funny, boring or both.

Do you like books about Vikings?. I read this in the manner of the pilot in Airplane! Do you also like movies about gladiators?
