television blogThe very first episode of the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica series was on last night. I always wanted to see this, and had never seen it. It was everything I'd expected. It's beautiful isn't it? It goes off the boil a bit mid-series though.

Morning flag flyers! Everyone pumped for England's world cup qualifier tonight? *puts on three lions 🎵* Oh. OTTM, no What happened to the Euros? Have they been scrapped now? I have zero pump for the Qatar World Cup, seems downright sickening that thousands of migrant labourers have died getting the infrastructure ready. Johnson should go full 80's Thatcher and pull us out.

Compress *this* lossless. What's that? You wouldn't want it any smaller? I've just deleted a work tweet I composed as I'd used the hook lyric from 99 problems and changed it to do with digital training. For the best I feel. Should have used 'Fuck Tha Police' Fewer problems with inherent underlying sexism*. * May not apply to other NWA lyrics.

Not about the deaths. They are appalling.
The UK government di not pull out of any sporting events in the 1980s. England were at all the major events apart from those we didn't qualify for - Euro 84. Scotland & NI were at a number of tournaments. Wales not so much. There was significant English hooliganism in Germany in 1988
There was a UEFA ban on English clubs in European club competitions following the Heysel disaster, but that wasn't government imposed.

I'm talking about your somewhat shaky 'knowledge' of the 1980s.

Yes it was mentioned. Lots of things are mentioned. There were no serious proposals put forward. It's the equivalent of taking one of Boris's meandering speeches as a serious policy framework.

BabyF The Euros are back on. And it's coming home*!
*Unless those pesky Scotch beat us in the group.
Friday night in London, in June, Eng v Scot. Pubs open (maybe).
Leave our crossbar alone!! 😁
Win the group and we might play all Ganes at Wembley. We'll certainly the group games and semi and final, where Sir Harry of Kaneshire lifts aloft the trophy and the continent of Europe are in unison saying "football has finally gone home and we are truly inspired".

Moscow Olympics? {Edit} Apparently not They were very successful for the GB team. Seb Coe in particular Partly this was down to the U.S. boycott. The boycott was cold war politics at its worst.

I went to England vs Scotland at Wembley a few years ago. It was brilliant, one of the best atmospheres I've been part of. No doubt 12 hours of drinking before the match enhanced the experience.

The trouble with cold war politics at its worst is they always try to walk it in.

Weirdly Wembley isn't that good for atmosphere. Not a patch on the Principality/Millennium stadium. I think it's better than Hampden which always looks like the fans are miles from the pitch. I've only been to Wembley for finals so the atmosphere would have been fantastic anywhere. I did think the Millennium Stadium was noticeably better than either old or new Wembley. It's more designed for fans rather than as a statement.

Crnk
I think we sulked a bit at the opening and closing ceremonies.. Perhaps not even at the closing ceremony. That was about it.

The SFA had a chance to move to Murrayfield last year but turned it down because the football establishment here are despicable weegies (no offence crankcaller). I suspect the atmosphere at the Wembley game was mainly in the away end - when I watched the highlights on telly it sounded like a library.

If it wasn't for the Cold War, Alan Wells would not have won the gold in 1980. This is why I am a huge fan of bringing the Cold War back.

It's beautiful isn't it? It goes off the boil a bit mid-series though. I loved it as a kid, but the destruction of the colonies was always shown in flashback at the start of each episode. I’d never seen it in the full hour-long extravaganza. What a spectacle. What a story.

The government would have pulled us out though if UEFA hadn't. Anyway it acts as a historical precedent for governments intervening and pulling teams out of tournaments. Johnson should pull us out of Qatar 2022 and run a rouge 2022 rival tournament in the UK. Hopefully just the home nations and few commonwealths would show up and England would lose a semi-final on penalties. It would be brilliant.
