tenthenemyWhen I went to Austria with my parents for Christmas around 20 years ago, I was amazed how my brain switched on to the language being spoken around me. I’d studied German at GCSE, thought I was quite good… and then gave up after a year of A-level study. But so much of it came back to me. I’d have these conversations with shop keepers, bar staff, and hotel workers where we’d have these half-German-half-English chats. My parents didn’t have a clue what was happening!

I went to France a few weeks ago. 5 years of French at school, several months of duolingo and podcasts to brush up before I went, still had absolutely no chance with the 200mph parisian lingo. I was a broken man by the end of day 2.

Is it really that difficult to find a 20 pack of Kronenbourg in Carrefour these days?

I am drinking a nice single malt and watching The Sting.
Released Christmas Day 1973. Never had it down as an Xmas movie though.

I was a broken man by the end of day 2. Parisians are as accommodating as Londoners; i.e. not. After spending 2-3 weeks in France for two out of three years' vacances en France for 30 years, outside of Paris, or some of the strange Catalan/Basque towns in the shadows of the Pyrenees, I've always found that I got along really well with ordinary folk in cafés and bars provided that I made the attempt to speak their language. If you remember that a lot of the two languages have words with common roots you can normally hazard a guess as to their meaning. And a liberal use of facial expressions, shrugs and gestures helps, although you run the risk of looking like a Pierrot...

The couple of times I've been to Germany and spoken "German" they've responded in perfect English. Better than my own, and for the best.
The daughter of a friend of my mum's lives in Hamburg. Her mother in law says she speaks better/nicer German than her lazy son. So swings and das Karussell I suppose.

Germany is great for the non-German speaking.
If they would switch to driving on the left it would be even more helpful.

Swiss German is where it is at. At sounding ridiculously cute, but mainly ridiculous? You are right.

Have you heard?
Uri Geller has discovered the location of the Ark of the Covenant.
I hope there’s a camera crew on hand for when he takes off the lid.

That was a fun one. I think I wrote the only three other words with that combination of 2nd/3rd/5th letter.
