I think, with this Russia situation, I’ve become a bit like ‘Hudson’ in Aliens.
I can only apologise.

Big Vlad's whole argument rests on the 'ancient Rus' being the same thing as Russians, but the Rus were originally a multi ethnic confederation not an ethnicity afaik. Have you seen this? en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_chronology_(Fomenko)I heard about it on a podcast the other day. The podcast lads said that 30% of Russians say they believe it.

Tl:dr small brain, too many long words with five or more letters in them, is there an abridged version (big words), like maybe just one sentence long?

I think, with this Russia situation, I’ve become a bit like ‘Hudson’ in Aliens. I can only apologise. Maybe too much PUBG/Fortnite has conditioned you. You're now always on high alert. Like a cobra. Perhaps seeing threats when none exist. Or maybe you see too clearly. See things others can't.

Rolling
It is fair to say that modern Russia is a direct descendant of medieval Muscovy. And that the pre-Russian state of Muscovy arose from what was left Kievan Rus after the Mongols smashed it up. It's not the same as saying Kiev=Russian. But, especially with the 'Rus' part of the name I can see why many Russians feel a strong connection to Ukraine. It is part of their history.
At the same I can see that the Ukrainians see the bear hug of the Russians as perhaps a little tight occasionally
I'm not sure multi-ethnic is a good description of the Rus. I have a suspicion it was more a group of Swedish vikings beating a load of Slavic peasants into doing what they wanted.

Just finished my lunch, during which I finished watching the brilliant Elementary Season 6. I just hope that Season 7 (which I believe is the final season) doesn't suffer from the kind of sloppy, self-regarding rubbish that crept into The Expanse, Lucifer and Babylon 5...
I have also just finished listening to the 25h long audiobook of Dune. I enjoyed it, but from the perspective of 50 years of re-reading, watching the film adaptation(s) I find the reduction of Jessica overnight to a frail, spiced up has-been peculiarly irritating.
I am being quickly and efficiently destroyed in 2 games of Diplomacy - in both cases weak players have effectively given their centres to my principal enemy from the outset. NP2 is going OK, but I am not going to win either of the two games that I am in, but my alliance will. Thank god for AoW3, which I can get so absorbed in playing that I stop feeling the pain from my various ailments.
A man is drinking at the bar and says "I've got to go; chores call." His mate asks "What chores?"
"I never thought you'd ask; a pint of bitter..."

Morning fans of Lorraine Kelly's toughest interviews!
Moribund. 1.1 (of a thing) in terminal decline; lacking vitality or vigour.
I've been moving houses, which is tricky as they are quite heavy. Currently seriously lacking in kitchen equipment and general amenities. However the TV and PS5 are set up and ready to go. Unfortunately so is the work desk.
Back to back high powered business meetings today after I've been out of action for a few days.
TV - Yellowjackets. Its better than it sounds. Not watched Bob Feet or Toast this week yet.

Boris Johnson is a terrible human being in lots of ways, but he hasn't yet laid claim to France (I know it's not quite the same). He's not sending tanks to the Irish border. I'm not saying Big Vlad is terrible. Maybe a little bit. Who knows? A democratically elected pro-Russian government was overthrown in Ukraine by a coup, with apparently fairly unpleasant nationalistic elements, but one that was immediately recognised by 'the West'. The invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq have demolished any moral authority the US / UK might have had on the issue, and made the UN seem almost irrelevant. Maybe it's understandable for Vlad to feel ... scooping Ukraine back into the fold might be ok? I don't know. I just don't want to get killed. Not so much that. I don't want my last minute on earth to be spent screaming in a burning cupboard after the first missiles hit.

Yeah that's more or less what I meant. Multi-ethnic as opposed to being 'Russian'. I didn't read it very carefully, but it looked like Putin's claim that Kiev is historically part of Russia was reliant on the very earliest part of Rus history (he quotes the Russian Primary Chronicle). It makes about as much sense as saying Strathclyde should be part of Wales, or England should be ruled from Rouen.
I'm virtually certain we are not really disagreeing (except I'm probably keener than you on the Rouen idea).

Probably not. I think the Mayor of Rouen* would be better than Bo Jo. Plus the heart of the Lionheart is in Rouen cathedral. So long as they don't use that Joan of Arc church as the administrative centre I'm in favour of the rule of Rouen. Can we regain citizenship of the EU this way? * I have no idea who the mayor of Rouen is, but it's an easy guess (s)he'd be better than Boris.

If the Norwegian government were to be toppled by a pro-Russian coup, which then started talking about joining the Warsaw Pact (in the pseudo-historical timeline I'd found myself living in), then I'd be a bit unsettled I think. I'd probably be ok with a shoring up of defences in the North Sea.
Having said that, if Boris Johnson were to then write an essay on the blood ties uniting Britain and Norway, I'd maybe begin to feel a bit wary.
