A word to the wise (and other boxers)
To say that this is beyond saying is an understatement but
BACKUP YOUR FILES IF UPGRADING TO WINDOWS 10 or ABOVE
FOOBAR:
I had been keeping a series of spreads based on covid-19 records as listed by Worldometer.info, including the global population at given increments, as well as a record of my readings for my electricity meter.
The covid lists went back as far September 2020 including changes to the formulas and the electricity list went back as far as May 2021, every day 10 am and 10 pm.
I luckily kept a hard copy of the electric reads but lost calibrations, costings, breakdowns and other functions day by day, week by week etc. within the spreadsheet files going back as far as November 2021.
For some unknown alien reason my PC which is a repurposed server decided to have a meltdown and went into standby, this is a no no as it's a nightmare to get it active again.
After much faffing about (I was also in the middle of cooking at the time) I managed to get it switched on again and it did it's usual start in DOS - PRESS F1 - WAIT -
waiting, still waiting, twitch whirr, stop - PRESS F1 AGAIN - only this time (due to being distracted by food) I hadn't looked at the screen properly and while it had seemed to be okay it wasn't starting up/press f1 as it did normally. Right, no problem, it takes 8 -10 mins to boot (did I mention it's old) hang on thats not the right screen.
Anyway multiple shutdowns and restarts later it comes up with the password box, yes the one that hasn't been used since the dinosaurs. A dig and rummage later I find it and get it typed in only to find that the PC gremlins have switched me to Windows 10 mode and as you know once it's running you can't go back to win 7 pro or another earlier version. I knew a guy years ago who had built it for me (I'm no PC tech by any means) a pro semi retired computer specialist, unfortunately he had become ill and moved away from the area and I don't trust PC World or have the funds top go private.
Very Very long story short, EVERY BIT OF DATA from september/november 2021 onwards IS GONE, including picture files (most of which I backed up) music files and an assortment of 'stuff' (no porn before you ask), why you ask, because of the absolute disgrace that is windows 10, edge and groove.
I am not pleased.
So as I started with, back up you files and take no chances because even when you think you're safe you are not.
