When I worked, I loathed meetings. When I eventually became a senior enough manager,I made it a policy that meetings should last only 45m maximum; one of the things that makes meetings so inefficient is confusion of objectives. Another is lack of preparation. They aren't unrelated... If you have to do the work to provide briefings before the meeting for your point, quite often the issue could be resolved before or with a short discussion with fewer people... Lazy-minded people love meetings as a way of not doing the work or shirking their responsibility. And managers who use them to 'gather' information are the worst - their meetings are a recipe for boredom .

I have colleagues who immediately arrange a meeting if I send a long email so they don't have to read it properly.

Morning all!
And what a glorious morning it is today on the south coast. Beautiful out there.

We have a 6 weekly meeting with HQ staff, managers and branch supervisors. We send in a report from each dept before this. You're meant to read it before the meeting and we can discuss any points. We also have a chance to add anything not in the report.
My line manager takes this as an opportunity to go over pretty much every fucking thing in the report my dept put in. "Crank, do you want to add anything?" "No thanks, it's in the report...". Aaaaaagggggghhhhhhhhhhh.
Hello. Games? Err. A phonebooth hit in GTA. That was it I think.

Meetings are pretty bad. A way for people to make themselves feel like they’re doing something without doing much effectively.
I say that - but I don’t know how other people feel. It’s just my guess.

I had to chair large meetings a few years ago and people rightly complained they were too long. The next one up I got a paragraph on every item pre circulated and told them all to read in advance so we could go straight to discussion instead of explaining everything over again. That meeting lasted 7 minutes because nobody had read the stuff and I got complaints that I was stifling debate.

I chaired a meeting once, it went very well.
I have also attended many meetings. Some people use them as an excuse to waffle on and on about some bollocks that I, frankly, couldn't give a flying fuck about, in an effort to ingratiate themselves to the management.
These are my thoughts.

I have an interview next week, for another job in the office I work in. I feel like the impression I give generally is like a bumbling cross between Philip Martin from Neighbours and Cosmo Kramer. It must be surmounted.
Maybe I will get some Heinrich Himmler glasses.
