hello ...
I went for after work drinks yesterday. Well, the drinks began in the office at 16.00, then they carried on for a bit. I had a strange, tremulous sense of desolation for most of the night. I've been operating in the shadows - digging deep in the mines of university administration - but now my job is changing and I feel more 'visible'.
It was a strange day. Someone who I have known for many years passed me in the work building foyer. I said 'hello' and made a friendly hand greeting gesture, but she just sort of looked me in the eye and walked straight past. I also had some chat with people I will now be 'line managing'. All a bit odd. Like I'd stepped into a funhouse and the floor was actually now up on the wall and rotating towards the ceiling ...
I thought perhaps it was nothing alcohol wouldn't fix. Then I found I was drinking Becks 0 percent. What the Hell? Soon remedied.
One colleague told me she was a philosopher and was interested in how contradictions could exist in the same place in the world. I said I didn't think they could and that it was all a matter of perception. She asked if I'd ever felt contradictions in my own life. I said 'Yes' and she asked me what they were ... It didn't seem the right place to open up about the vast flaws and fissures in my personality, so I just stuttered and bumbled. A bad business. Then we got turfed out by a security guard ...
A strange night. Basically good (I think? ...)

Hello again
Birmingham
Can anyone recommend an excellent carvery in Birmingham / North Birmingham / Sutton Coldfield (Lichfield?)
Ideally the kind of place where a chef in a tall hat sharpens his knives behind the meats as he’s waiting to carve / serve up.
Or a decent pub …

It’s far too hot for a roast though…

Is it alright to have a beer with lunch then go back to work? Asking for a friend…

Is it alright to have a beer with lunch then go back to work? Asking for a friend… I'm not sure we are the right people to ask about this. My answer is yes, but no more than 5 pints.

Is it alright to have a beer with lunch then go back to work? Asking for a friend… Unless you operate heavy machinery, yes. When I first worked in London I used to have 3 pints every Friday lunchtime. One of the bosses used to have 3 pints every day and four on a Friday. And drink in the evenings. He did die from the consequences of alcoholism in his early 40s. So it's not necessarily recommended.

Sweltering on London’s Portobello Road. Or maybe I’m sweltering because I’m sat inside, eating a hot pasty. Now going to have a hot coffee. The weather doesn’t tell *this guy* what to do.

Ideally the kind of place where a chef in a tall hat sharpens his knives behind the meats as he’s waiting to carve / serve up. Or a decent pub … Not really. There's a carvery on the Lichfield Road just past Blake Street. Also the Sutton Park. Both are Toby's I think. Miller & Carter at Powell's Pool will do an ok Sunday lunch. There's the Railway, The Plough and The Fox & Hounds at Shenstone. Not been to any of them since lockdown. I'd avoid The Bull on the main road. The Holly Bush at Little Hay might be ok. The Old Irish Harp is no more than ok at best. There's a few ok aces in Lichfield. I've eaten ok food in one of the pubs near Lloyds Bank but that was a long time ago. I tend only to go to Lee Garden or Eastern Eye to eat there. There is a michelin starred place, but it booked out for lunch until 2024. There's also The Whittington Arms at Whittington an The Tame Otter and Red Lion at Hopwas. Not been to any of them recently though. Also if it is for Sunday I think it might be difficult to find places. There are also a couple of good places at Abbots Bromley, but that is a way out. I got magnificently drunk on Roaring Meg in one of them. Properly plastered. Is that a recommendation? Yes, yes it is.

The Eastern Eye was the best Indian restaurant recommendation I’ve ever been given.
