I went into a tobacconist in Amsterdam. A beaming man appeared at the counter and I bought some tobacco. I’m reading a book on Germanic languages, so was feeling inclined to treat Dutch and English as dialects of the one big language family. To say ‘Do you have?’ in Dutch I think you’d say ‘Heb je?’, like ‘Have ye? It’s basically Olde English. So I said ‘Have you tobacco?’ It seemed like a bridge between the two worlds. Well anyway we had this jocular exchange and I bought the tobacco then left. But when I was by the door the man shouted after me ‘Goodbye Mr Scandinavian accent!’ I thought he was talking to someone else but then he said ‘You are from Scandinavia yes? You are from Norway?’ I put a hand over my heart and bowed my head slightly, maybe closing my eyes a bit, and said ‘Ah no, I am English’. He said ‘Oh! Well you are welcome! You and what you do out on your island!’ I think I did a fear-grin at this point, and left.
We’re back in London now. I mean the pm and me.
It’s cold … I’m wondering if it’s possible to squeeze any festive cheer out of the Ninth Day of Christmas …

I tried Amnesia Haze once in Amsterdam. Powerful stuff. So much so that a lady employee of the coffee shop we were sat outside came over and asked if I was ok and did I need any help. I didn't think I felt that bad but took it as a sign and immediately did The Amsterdam Walk™ back to the hotel.
The Amsterdam Walk™ = Hands shoved into trouser front pockets, head down, no eye contact with anyone, walk briskly back to hotel, go straight to room, no interaction with others.

Chumbles. Hope the boiler lads are on top of things. I was being conned, I think. I got through to the guy and he tells me that the Valve can't be picked up today as it's a Bank Holiday. "Surely you knew that last Friday ..." "It slipped my mind." He rang back 15m later saying they could send another engineer to see if he could get something going." I pointed out that "without the valve they couldn't fix it!" |

The only Dutch thing I've got in the house is a packet of Stroopwafels we brought back from the PM's maws house.
I'm in the office on Wed - but there's a rail strike and won't be able to see the chew vendor before I have to get a bus home. Baws.

I then argued with someone that it's the same tomorrow as my phone diary says it is. Only when I opened up the diary did I see "Scotland Only" at the end of the entry. |

Both the PM and I are back at work tomorrow. Inset day for the boy though, so he’ll be with his nan.
However, my partner and I are both ill. She’s worse off than me, though I reckon I’m a day or two behind her in terms of symptoms.
It’s like seeing my future.
Went to the playground earlier with the boy. One of his school friends was there, so he had great fun galloping around.

I watched Evil Under the Sun on iplayer this morning. It was preposterous. Also, nearly every member of the main cast is now dead. The curse of Evil Under the Sun. Or maybe Maggie Smith killed them all, as she is still alive?
