Hi
It’s an early start for me - a one day week. Got to pack a lot in.
Currently drinking a cup of tea and considering entering ‘Notting Hill Carnival’ into Google News to see if anything kicked off.
I felt heavily sedated most of yesterday afternoon and slept. Then played Fortnite. Not much else going on.

Are you saying that this will also wipe the storage disks unless I remove them first? It's all so complicated I might just hit it with a hammer and see how that goes instead.

Sheep2I do have some ripped as FLAC. The majority was MP3. I shoved three albums on my phone last night from the pile of mp3's. Two were 320. One was 192 vbr. Oof. Terrible. Really bad. I own better earbuds now which is probably showing it up. And I'm not stoned. The plan is rip to FLAC, then possibly transcode all that to AAC for portable listening. But I'm probably as well just using Spotify instead for on the move. The tons of DJ mixes that weren't ripped from cd are mostly all MP3 or AAC anyway. There may be some OGG in there. Hello. TV. Finished Jury Duty. Games. No.

I use Asunder CD ripper and flac has compression levels from zero to 8 you can set. Zero being the best as there is zero compression. I think when I first realised that I could alter the setting and did research it is recommended to have a setting of three or four. This gives best option for giving good quality and the best file size. It just adds another level of head scratching.

Yes, I did it for four seconds, then logged on. Data was not deleted, but all settings were reset (including passwords, 2FA, firewall, and manually set ports), and I was able to log on as Admin and set up a new password. I need mine to be on the internet, but it now has regular failed attempts to log on to it, which apparently is quite common. So obviously worth taking security reasonably seriously, delete admin account, set up firewall, etc. |

192 MP3s and lower rate sound properly awful, regardless of the music.
320 kps should be ok, but modern earphones won't do them any favours.
I don't see any advantage of transcoding to AAC to play from FLAC unless you can't play FLACS. There's loads of FLAC players for various phones.
I don't think it would make any difference so it seems a waste of time. Unless you really enjoy converting files. Which I am not discounting.
I use a little Fiio DAP that was £60 but plays 192-24 FLACS. It is tiny. Sadly since I bought it they have raised their prices so the cheapest model is now about £300.
It's permanently in the car. This is because USB sticks were too unwieldy. While the stereo plays stuff it completely lacked a proper menu for USBs so I couldn't find anything.

The transcoding was just for it taking less time/storage moving onto my phone.
I've got a hooky copy of Adobe media encoder that uses your graphics card so it transcodes stuff really quickly.
Yeah the 192 is terrible. Stinks.

99% of that is Shenguin's failed attempts to access his own NAS.
I have lots of storage so file size is unimportant. I'd rather have best file quality.
So I can listen to my terrible music at its best.
If I listen carefully I can tell the difference between a 24/96 recording and a 16/44.1 CD equivalent on complex music. It's easier through earphones.
It also requires a hi-def recording in the first place and I don't have that many. Almost anything recorded from 1985 and 2010 has been squeezed to 16/44.1 at some point anyway.
For the most part CD is a pretty good standard. That is why it was selected. Done well it offers a slightly better range than an LP (the bass can be heavier) but the sound is not reliably different for the most part.
