At the end of the piece is preferable, in a piece of several movements, rather than between movements. But with an unfamiliar piece, that can lead to some guessing. I think it's always nice to show appreciation of good music, and I'm really relaxed about how and when people do that.
AT THE END OF THE FUCKING PIECE MOTHERFUCKER. OR I WILL. FUCKING. KILL. AGAIN.

I think also its often considered polite to wait until the last note has definitely echoed away, not to start enthusiastically while the final note is still being played. Allow the conductor to hold the silence of the final note.
It's the perfect blankness of the second after orgasm. The only time any of us can ever be truly happy, in the silence of nothingness.
REALLY, IF YOU CLAP AT THE WRONG TIME, ITS FUCKING INSTAPERMADEATH YOU FUCKING MUSIC-HATUNG BASTARD, YOU'RE RUINING MY LIFE.

It's really difficult to tell with minimalist music sometimes. Has the piece finished? Has the movement finished? Is it just a quiet bit?
Resolve the issue by not clapping. If they can't play a proper tune at a proper volume with a clear and unambiguous ending they'll just have to assume I didn't like it.
I went to a Proms concert that featured the premiere of some minimalist music. Absolutely no chance of knowing if it has finished. Fortunately it was about 6 Scottish pieces and they introduced each one so at least I knew the previous one had finished some time ago and a new one was starting.
And yes there was some premature applause before pieces had finished.

Do you have to set a timer for "4'33" or would clapping ruin the piece?
<edit>or should you clap during it thus adding to it?

The only live classical music I've seen was at the Barbican which was basically Tchaikovsky's greatest hits with cannons.
<edit>It was well good. 4*

I have just been on a train. Doing some good work. I captured Bordeaux and Paris. My king has also turned out to be a pagan magician. Sadly my secret weapon, the general ‘Laurence Butler’ died.
I’m going to attack York next.

I went to see Beethoven’s 9th Symphony a few years ago. Or it could have been the 7th. It was good but … maybe my ears have been brutalised. I would have liked it to have been louder. And more immersive, with the lights turned down. As it was the lights were on and I spent a while distracted by other things going on around the hall.

I prefer the sausages slightly over done and crispy on the outside. There's nothing worse than a soft pallid sausage.
