I am not keen on the period between the end of the season and the start of the Euros. I ended up watching the Fortuna Dusseldorf v Bochum play off game last night. It was surprisingly good. Dusseldorf were 3-0 up from the away leg and cruising. Bochum managed to get a goal back early. Then two in the second half to send the tie to extra time Despite lots of pressure right at the end Fortuna did not score. 4-4 on penalties. On the second round of sudden death the Fortuna player absolutely skied it. Miles over. Then collapsed in tears.
Only the Conference final and the CL final left now.

The lack of two hour plus e/w trips to Blackburn or Huddersfield leaves me with too much time. I bought new trainers (2 pairs) and some new underwear. This made Saturday morning pretty expensive. Much more than an away game.
Books Henry III David Carpenter The first 300 pages are quite dry, also the next 416. The good news is that the second part (1258-1272) is out in paperback in the Autumn so I have enough time to regroup before it arrives. 1,400 pages on Henry III is plenty. I am told it is the definitive modern history of the period in England. The bank holiday gave me enough time to read the last 300 pages.
Towers of Books I collapsed two piles by taking a book out of the middle jenga style. I have reconstructed the piles more securely and with the books I want to read next at the top. Obviously tastes will change and I will want one of the books now at the bottom shortly.

Only books that have been read get fully categorised and alphabetised. Well they did until I ran out of space,
Unread books get added to the piles of shame in order. Newest books on top. Until a pile collapses at which point it is rebuilt on a structurally sound basis, Biggest books at the bottom, books most likely to actually be read at the top.
I ought to stop buying books, but it is difficult.

I also spent my evening watching German football, and rearranging piles of books. A troubling coincidence. I have no desire to go to Blackburn or Huddersfield though. And it has been many years since I bought new underwear

I’m reading a book on financial speculation fever throughout the ages. I’m not sure I’ve mentioned it. It’s ok. Not dry. The European basis for stocks and shares trading lay in the carnivals apparently - when normal order was overturned. A village idiot might become ‘king for a day’. This kind of thing. The kind of scenario in which a man might be seem riding on a pig, or in which another man in a fools cap might be poking his head out of a beer barrel. The relaxing of laws meant trading was permitted. I think … This was my understanding …
There is a section in the book about the South Sea Scheme. I don’t think I understood that.

amipalWhy are you worried about people eating bacon rolls? A surreptitious message from the Cosmos about Labour losing the election? It is more the increased chances of seeing them again… We went on a boat trip on Sunday, where Chinese tourists started eating pasties and Pringles as soon as the boat left the dock. All of them were ill.

The Ship does have a history when in inclement weather, tripadvisor.co.uk 'The Scillonian is notoriously bad in rough weather with many horror stories about how almost everyone on board is ill. It doesn't sail at all during the Winter'. Happy sailing

Did anyone hear about the hoarder crushed under his collection of historical and sci fi books? Bad way to go under the weight of the Roman empire.

There’s a character in the Michael Winner film ‘West 11’ who has Big Sheep2 Energy. He’s a hoarder who gives up his job to become a ‘seeker of truth’ - staying inside and reading many dusty books. I wish I could find a clip on YouTube. Ah - maybe you’re not missing much….

amipalWhen we first met you gave me a powerful ‘naval handshake’. I hope to never forget it. As a result I’m imagining today that you’re stood on the deck of the Scillonian III, with your hands on your hips, and laughing, as all about you lose their heads. I truly hope that this is the case. If not please don’t say.

This ‘Socialist Explainer’ in the Guardian annoys me: www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/may/28/is-starmer-really-a-socialist-and-what-will-happen-if-labour-wins-electionHas socialism been tried in practice?Yes. The Russian Revolution of 1917 heralded a communist regime that grew into the Soviet Union. Under Joseph Stalin it turned into a dictatorship that inflicted misery, hardship and death on millions of people. As well as in eastern Europe, socialism or communism has been tried in China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam and countries in Latin America and Africa. Few would say they have been a roaring success.Isn’t this conflating socialism with Karl Marx inspired communism? … I’m not an expert but it’s a broader church than that isn’t it? And there are lots of quite successful governments you’d consider to have been socialist. I mean Labour governments before 1997 … Maybe in Scandanavia? I mean in a broad sense … I used to think the Guardian was a socialist newspaper. Maybe it was once. Maybe I was confused. Maybe I was deluded.
