Hello
Iβm in Meganisi.
I know there are no locks on tents either. I once fell asleep in a tent and woke up to find someone had stolen Β£80 from my pocket.
I shouldnβt have brought my laptop. It wonβt fit in the safe and I need it because itβs the only place I have the email account all my security questiions go to, for apps and so on. For my phone, for banking. I wouldnβt have bought it if I knew the villa had no locking front door.
You can see the locks did lock once but are now all broken. I know I should be more relaxed about it but Iβm not β¦
Or should I be more relaxed? Maybe I shouldnβt.
I had a good idea for a story β¦
A man goes on holiday with his wife, son and daughter, to a Greek island. The villa owner says there are no locks on the doors because thereβs no crime. The man gets haunted by nightmares that the villa is under seige by satyrs. His daughter goes missing. The man gets thrown in jail.
I think it has promise.

We have two weeks here.
I am liking it. I do like it. But Iβd like it more if we had a lock on the front door. Well theyβre big patio doors.
To me β¦ a lock is essential. Surely itβs one of the human needs. Safety? Security? Should I maybe consider taking the owners to the European Court of Human Rights?
I need to secure the perimeter.
I wonder if, maybe instead of taking a laptop with me I should travel with a drill and screwdrivers.
Weβre going to the main town on the island today.
I hadnβt quite understood how essential a secure perimeter was for my peace of mind.

Locking doors is probably a new thing. My parents when young would not have locked their doors going by what they told me. When I was young we had a key tied to a piece of string that hung behind the letter box for any one to use. I normally lock my back door at night but never lock it when I'm out during the day. I'm unusual I guess that I have no internal doors. I removed them all. Maybe I feel a sense of openess and freedom by not having any internal obstructions. I do have curtains at the door ways to stop draughts during the winter and for a sort of bohemian feel.

I do wonder how the holiday will end
It seems as if the owner of the villa will drive us to the port to drop us at the ferry. I imagine Iβll be in the back of the car, fuming. At some point heβll ask us is we had a good time, and Iβll have to say βNo. well yes. You have to fix your front door. It is essentialβ and Iβll expand on my themes in a frustrated semi-articulate way. He might then drop us off at the side if the road, or the pm will try and talk me down, then we will fall out at the end and that will be the book-emd of the holiday.
Itβs a shame really. It would be perfect if the very simple act of providing a lockable front door had been carried out.
I donβt want to fixate but β¦ itβs almost like getting to a holiday home and being told thereβs no toilet. βItβs not that kind of place. We go out in the woods.β
I mean I donβt want to go on about it.
Gah

If I was spooked by a noise outside at night.

If you want to teach the owner a lesson, prove him wrong by doing some crime. Loads of crime. Crime 24/7. Then tell him he needs to sort out a lock

Oi oi! Shipping the boy off to a grandparent this morning. A mate is coming over to divest us of some excess loft insulation. βIβll take as much as I can squeeze into the carβ - said car is a Honda Jazz. So Iβll be loading my car too, and following him up to his place with it. lazybonesFind out where the nearest B&Q equivalent is, and go and tool-up.

I need it because itβs the only place I have the email account all my security questiions go to, for apps and so on. For my phone, for banking. Jesus Christ. We're having a discussion on password security and MFA when you're back young man. I have a password manager. It has all the stuff in it. There are single use backup codes for access to it. So you need a bit of paper with some of those codes, those codes in the PM's phone as well, maybe an encrypted pen drive. Not a huge laptop.

I may be being a bit thick here, but how can your email account only be on one laptop? Surely it's on 'the Internet' and so can be accessed from anywhere?

Cleared out my old PS4 along with a bundle of games and a WD gaming drive from under the telly. I've given it to the girl who walks my dog to give to her 10 year old brother and 12 year old sister to use. Two young lives now destined to be ruined by gaming.
