Games: Started Tressa's third chapter in Octogenarian Travel Insurance, decided to do a side quest that required accompanying one character to the other end of the map, realised Ophilia wasn't up to the task, used Primrose instead with a 32% success rate, ruined my reputation, restored it because I'm currently rolling in the moolah, tried again, failed again, scum saved because fuck this, got lucky on my last try before the last.
Whew.
Fast travelled to the required location because I'm not traipsing all the way to the other corner of the map, mission accomplished. Now trying to decide whether I'll take on the nearby optional dungeon boss I have so far failed against.
Authentic gibberish.
Dark Souls update: Royal Mail sent me another message identical to the one on Saturday, only with today's date for the delivery. Smooth.

Erm, I'm sure you can find another one cheaper on here, if you're not too fussy. I regret this already. Sorry. Shenguin beating me to the low hanging fruit once again. I can assure you I have never knowingly laid a finger on your low-hanging fruit.

Right, I'm in a bar in Glasgow. Does anyone want a fight? Anyone called Campbell in here?
I'm in a good mood, so I put a shiny fifty pence piece in Melvazord's cup on my way here.

Is there a day-one update for RDR2?
Just wondering if booking the day off is such a good idea...

I done it and it took forever, but seeing the icon on the page is fantastic.

I was worried about that.. when I downloaded the division it took all weekend and it was half the size.

Right, I'm in a bar in Glasgow. Does anyone want a fight? Anyone called Campbell in here? Why, did you forget to hide the silver ware and get out the cheap whisky? (apologies to all Campbells present. Some of my best friends are Campbells.)

My RDR2 plan is as follows : Forget to pre-order it. Not get time to go out and buy it over weekend. Order from Amazon at some point early next week. Collect from neighbour/sorting office, or fish out of recycling bin. Try to install, remember my hard drive is full. Get new hard drive. Wait 6 years to install.
I can't wait.

Everyone is going to be trying to download the update on day one. Investment bankers. French onion johnies. Mongolian goat herders. Everyone. And does the digital download include the patch? Because I know in the past that they didn't (on the PS3 anyway). I am not trying to burst anyone's bubbles here.

amipal no bubbles being burst don't worry! I've just remembered it's coming on two discs isn't it? One download and one playable, so presumably you won't actually need to download much and it'll be quite quick? Rockstar really are the best.

Everyone knows the Mongolian Goatherders make a mockery of net neutrality. They'll have the update hours before you lot, and you'll never catch up with them. 82.3% of Fortnite winners are members of the Khalkha tribe.

That's why they are goat herders in the first place. They get in there nice and early and get everyone's goat. Once they've got all the goats they've got to herd them.

Re-heated Chicken tikka masala for lunch. From Friday night takeaway? I hope you're the one in your office who's desk is next to the toilet...

I'm having a strange day. Not used to having Mondays off. Baked a Japanese cheesecake for the first time. It should look like a pillow but is ..... crinkly. Hmm
OTTM. Rum for lunch may not be a good idea.

I recently discovered that Ekimmu were a version of a vampire spirit from ancient Mesopotamia. Nice bit of lore referencibg in Witcher 3! Nice, but unfortunately not quite right. Ekimmu is an out-of-date reading of the Akkadian (that's the overarching term for Babylonian and Assyrian) word for "spirit of the dead, ghost, revenant". Cuneiform is polyvalent, i.e. one sign/character can be read in different ways. This has let to many "wrong" readings in the past; e.g. the demoness Lamaštu used to be known as "Labartu". The struggle for "correct" readings is real (usually you need to luck out by finding an alternative spelling or you need to have a solid etymology). Here someone was keen to have an etymological connection to the verb ekēmu 'to snatch away', and they were no doubt confused by the existence of an associated word "thief, snatcher" that is also used to describe a demon and could maybe be a standalone name, but the word is ekkēmu, and it usually just applied to Lamaštu. The word for "ghost", on the other hand, has been known now for a number of decades to be eṭimmu (the T with the dot underneath is a T pronounced with a bit more gusto). Its etymology goes back to the Sumerian word gidim with the same meaning. The word is used to describe any spirit of the dead and not vampire-like beings, but ghosts are generally malevolent and bad news for the living, particularly the family of the deceased. The spirits of the dead were thought to get restless if they had been denied a proper funeral. There is a lot of Mesopotamian lore about vampire-like demons, first and foremost Lamaštu, who preys mainly on pregnant women and babies and who was thought to drink blood, but the concept of the undead drinking blood did not exist. There was, however, an illness that was known as the "hand of a ghost". The "Ekimmu" seems to have taken on a life of its own in popular culture, as is so often the case - hang on, was this the sound of something being pushed through the letterbox? COULD IT BE MY DARK SOULS???
