I am in the office for the first time this week. It is quiet as I am the only one in at the moment. Though I am expecting someone in shortly.
Note: I have (just this minute) undiverted the phone system so I can receive calls. This may help to explain why the office is so quiet. It's not as if I wanted to talk to anyone.

I listen a lot to the World Service and heard an interesting and somewhat alarming interview with Andrea Crisanti... it's in the Latest News 05:42... Even over a long time the majority of infected people are and remain entirely asymptomatic and remain so.That is fucking terrifying. If there are cases in your area and you are wandering about, you may have caught or be likely to catch and pass on the virus to everyone you meet, including those you love. Given the very low % of the population in that study who were symptomatic, you can draw your own conclusions about the need for your 'at risk' relations to self-isolate. www.forbes.com/sites/brucelee/2020/03/18/what-percentage-have-covid-19-coronavirus-but-do-not-know-it/#6049ea7a7e90

scamanderWhat lessons do the ancients have for us in our present plight? Did the Greeks ever get forced to philosophise from home? Did the Romans ever run out of those sponges on sticks they used to wipe their arses with? there were some nasty plagues back in the day but the general rule was get out if you were rich or die if you were poor. Smaller population sizes and cities meant that plagues had less foothold.

Just had a call from my boss saying all staff who aren't at risk have to come in to the office as the IT infrastructure can't handle the amount of people working from home.

I can tell him you are a deeply vulnerable and flawed individual. Send me his email and I'll forward copious evidence. It will get you as much time off as you need.

That's crap, faceless. Ask him to put in writing his definition of 'Not at risk'.

I stopped short of telling him I'm going for the spoderman platinum, and having to come into the office would really get in the way.
I'll save that for my next appraisal.

According to the ancient Babylonian calendar the 19th day of each month is the Day of the Wrath of Gula, the healing goddess. Not the kind of thing one would like to hear in a global pandemic.
However, Gula guided my hand last night when I was looking for something in the garage and found one of originally three sealed double packs of hand sanitiser that I bought a bit more than a decade ago when it was on special offer in Lidl. It was like unearthing an ancient treasure.
I also found out that the grandchildren's parents are guilty of minor bogroll panic buying; mind you, they are a family of six. Still, they got 100 rolls from Jeff which is maybe a bit much. They didn't want to store them in the garage where the neighbours might get a glimpse of this bogroll bonanza, so they are now clogging up their bedroom. I suppose they could lie on their hoard like Smaug, at least it would be soft.
DQB2 report: Went back to Furrowfield for the first time to do (spoiler). Was glad to see that the folks left behind were doing well. Made a lava pit on the I.o.A. as part of the tablet target challenge, neat feature to have around anyway. I now have Fright Bulbs growing in my garden, they are super cute. Then I found out that in my excitement of finishing the story I didn't take in a new recipe that's key to fulfilling the last tablet targets, so I know what I'll do tonight.
Not much time left. The Doom Eternal/Animal Crossing Day is tomorrow.
Btw, the Trials of Mana demo is now out on every good platform.

Dammit, the point of my bit is that all of the linked material is from evidence-based research from scientists NOT fucking journalists ... As for mass testing, it's a grand idea, but there's not enough test kits to do it, and all it will do is tell us we're fucked.
We already know that; the point is to try and flatten the curve. For quite a few of you will already have it and continue to have it, as your body's immune system will not go into overdrive to try and get rid of it. People my sort of age, with any kind of breathing problem, or auto immune system problem it's as close to a death sentence as you can guess.
My auto immune system is already hair-triggered to react to ANY infection - 4 stints in A&E and the ICU over the last 6 years AND I'm asthmatic AND I 'm 69. And that's just the headline stuff. Of course I am, in my resigned way, prepared to snuff it... there will be a few friends like one or two of you who might miss me, but I don't have any close friends or family left alive, so my passing will be, thank the first cause a minor bump in the road... And I have my will, LPAs etc. all ready and waiting. I'm hanging on because I am helping out some people I know with 0% loans, because they're self-employed ... if I get c19 then they will be converted to gifts. I'm NOT a saint, but what kind of cunt would I be when I can help, but don't.
So, in order to do keep things in proportion and to assure myself of my facts, I check what evidence based research reports, not what journos report. It's even more vital that you check the facts and don't follow the herd in picking up soundbites to base your actions on. That is all I'm saying. You guys are as bright (and in some cases brighter) than I am. I have a queue of chores to deal with so I am outta here

My boss just told me about some fucking arsehole in HR who said "I mean, it's not that bad - there's not been that many deaths..." This is someone involved in deciding policy for WFH, time off etc.

There’s panic on the streets of London…
Just another Smiths song that I’m refusing to listen to because of his right wing stance.

Hello everyone, how are you all holding up?
Now that the nurseries are also shutting, the boy will be home with us from now on. Luckily my partner has just been given the nod on working from home, so at least we can share the time between us. His nan would be an option, except for the fact that she's in her late sixties and has only just got over a chest infection. Better safe than sorry.
TVblog - finally finished The Expanse last night, which was brilliant as always. It and other Amazon shows really show a massive difference in quality of story compared with Picard. I approach the latter with an almost "how will you disappoint me this time?" mentality.
Gamesblog - more building, mainly focussed around the sandy bit. I made a changing room.
Newtechblog - I watched the Mark Cerny presentation on the PS5 technical specs. Very, very dry. I mean, very impressive specs, but there is no excitement in the video.

I’m trying to think of Smiths puns but I’ve always hated the fucker so barely know the songs and realise I’ve started something I couldn’t finish. I’ve been panic buying tonic. Also, no one in this country knows about polenta.

One advantage I will concede to the PC Master Race is that they’ve probably all got decent chairs for WFH. Life on dining chairs is going to wreck my back. Smug bastards.
