Yosser must be getting on a bit these days. Arafat - he of whom an apolitical friend once asked "isn't he the Chairman of the P&O" - has long since snuffed it. (I know, I know, that was a J.O.K.E.)

I sort of wish I'd chosen a more grass-roots football team to support. I chose Liverpool in the 1980s because I lived within the psychological catchment area and they were doing well, but I now kind of wish I'd chosen the closest team to my place of birth. This would have been Leamington FC. Managing them in Football Manager was maybe a subconscious attempt to live out a football experience with gravitas.

I have been up since 5am and doing chores and stuff in order to get stuff prepared and sorted out in preparation for my computer guy to cart away my 'server'* a tiny HP ProLiant MicroServer G1610T Gen8 for upgrading to 4 x 4tb disks. *It's not really a server as it's w10 pro,. I am not prepared to fork out the humungous cost (ca. £430) for Windows Server 2016 for a tiny home network... up yours 🖕 you thieving M$ bandits... And also my beautifully silent secondary PC has gone for upgrading to w10 pro (fan only kicks in for the dara/dvd drives and all the audio gear runs off ssds)... I'm paying the guy because he's good and because I literally cannot get onto the floor under my desk and get up again. Legs are fucked, dear boy. BTW Games... I posted a long post about current games early this a.m. in the weekend's box...

Felice
Apparently the problem was they used one column per patient in Excel. Not one row per patient which maxes out at over 1m.
So when spreadsheets were merged if there were too many people data was lost

It's unbelievable that with that much data they were using Excel as the main storage.
I was told 20 years ago that for large amounts of data you need a database. Then you manipulate that data in Excel.

Morning toilet slammers!
Rig chat - You'll want at least 32GB NVEDRAM for VLOOKUPS with that bat pox spreadsheet. The funny thing is it is probably not all that intensive at all as far as the capabilities of the computer are concerned, but when it comes to poorly cobbled together Microsoft software...
Ring chat - REDACTED
Games chat - Animal crossing. The pumpkins thing is a nice addition, I'm back in. Paper Mario - Top banana. Its not too demanding and suits nicely with my current level of general brain fog.
Genshin Impact - anyone tried this? Its basically a BOTW knock off but it runs surprisingly well on the old dog and bone, and it looks very nice, and its free. Top, banana, as they say.

So when spreadsheets were merged if there were too many people data was lost That doesn't really make sense. Nobody would be stupid enough to spread patients across the columns instead of across the rows, especially when the column count is so much more limited, and the test count is so high. Also, it would suggest being able to report on up to almost 16,384 new positive tests, whereas they appeared to max out well before that.

I like the bit in 'The Two Towers' where Gandalf gives King Theoden back his sword. I was convinced I saw King Theoden / Captain Edward Smith / the husband from Shirley Valentine, in Kephalonia recently, but it was just a raffish Greek gent ... I like Gandalf recounting his tale of survival, about battling the Balrog: "I smote his ruin upon the mountainside." It has been three or four years since I last saw a celebrity in the wild. Stephen Mangan, strolling with his mates (he migh call them his "lads") in Brighton. They may have been "between boozers".

I'm not saying it does make sense, but that is apparently what they did. Maybe they were storing more than 16,384 pieces of information per patient and therefore need the extra rows?

It's unbelievable that with that much data they were using Excel as the main storage. I was told 20 years ago that for large amounts of data you need a database. Then you manipulate that data in Excel. It probably isn't the main storage, it's probably just how they're viewing, working with and reporting on the data. Is your source the Daily Mail? I can't click on that Google search result. Does it say if they're using the NHS SUS database for it? It would make sense if they were, as it's an established national system stable with that sort of volume of data, and with expert(ish) users at all community and secondary care providers and commissioners, and well-understood system integration requirements. I bet they're using Google Sh**ts.

It's (almost) equivalent to the Russians not panicking when the dosage meters at Chernobyl read 3.6 Roentgens per hour therefore some people's initial assessment was that the reactor had not exploded.

It is from the Daily Mail via Twitter. I got it from the Guardian which took it from Politico. The M**l may have used the same source. I wouldn't willingly go to their site and I don't really use twitter.

Lovecraft Country: I've not seen this weeks, or possibly last weeks either. Overall though I am a bit ambivalent towards it. I sort of appreciate it, rather than enjoy it. It can be quite unpleasant viewing, what with all the gore and relentless racism.
