I've been totally mesmerised by the final part of Arden's tour de force the Winternight Trilogy; better than two of my other favourite trilogies The Riddle-Master's Game by Patricia A. McKillip, and the Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay... I should be asleep, but... I am an incorrigible romantic; so the stories in these heal my soul

FOR FUCKSAKE MAN, HAVE SOME FUCKING TACT. DO NOT MENTION THE LAST KVOTHE BOOK UNLESS IT'S ACTUALLY PUBLISHED. FUCKSAKE. I am so upset right now. I realise he'll never publish it, so could people please just not talk about it. Talking about it does not help me repress.

If you don't put the magic strudel i.e. @ in front of Chumbles I won't see your post. In answer to your question, my knowledge is OK up until 2005 when ophthalmic zoster fucked up my eyes so I can barely read for any more than 30m; whereas I got through a couple of books a week before ... How many and do you prefer hardcore sf or softcore; and how much effort do you want to put in... e.g. Stephen Donaldson's Covenant stuff is long and starts grim and gets grimmer... Whereas Ursula K LeGuin's is shorter and more approachable - comic fantasy is really hard to write so you get few of those. I like nearly everything so guide me a bit! I'll try and get together a list, but for the more modern stuff I suggest Sheep2 and cobblers...

Depends innit
Fantasy Joe Abercrombie is fantastic. I can't recommend him enough if you haven't read them. Not 'comic' but plenty of humour N K Jemison Scott Lynch John Gwynne Anthony Ryan Adrian Selby Miles Cameron Connie Willis - Particularly The Doomsday Book Glen Cook
Sci-Fi Al Reynolds A Reynolds Al Reynolds Cixin Liu Ann Leckie Greg Evans Adrian Tchaikovsky Adam Roberts Paul McAuley Jeff Van Der Meer - though the books get worse. The first is preety good.
There should be something on that list that is approachable and you haven't read. I could probably find others....

Stephen Donaldson - Don't read the last Chronicles. of Thomas Covenant They are pretty grim.
By which I mean the quality of plotting and writing takes a sharp downward turn.

Tuffers
If you think that list is bad you should see the list of history books. Frighteningly dusty.
I am reading a book about the outer edges of the Roman Empire (well not reading it as I've been playing Demon's Souls when not watching football) It's excellent So far I have read the chapters on Britain & Germanica & and am working through Raetia. I am enjoying it a lot. Or i was until the P5 intervened.

Hit us with the history list, sheep, i am bang out of ideas for Xmas presents for my elderly relatives.
I've tried two Neil Stephensons and given up both times. The man needs an editor, I need a longer attention span, or both.

I need a drink. One beer that doesn't smell of piss. Beer doesn't count as a drink since the first lockdown began, it's now just a soft drink. Here, have two of my cans of Punk IPA -- they're only 330ml each, so two at a time is best. I'm drinking them tonight as I'm having an alcohol-free evening.
