The trick with ponds is to make them as huge as possible. I grew up with one that was around 8 metres long and 8 metres wide and 5 feet deep in the middle. It had an island too for the ducks. The ducks were great, but one night my Dad forgot to put them away in their shed and the fox ate them. More specifically ate their heads. The newts and kingfishers were nice too. Foxes will often take the heads to the next kill and leave them there. I always thought of you as a duck island type.

A 12y-o is doing food technology lessons by preparing shakshuka now. Later we'll reheat it and add the eggs for the baking part. The kitchen is rather smoky, and the food looks shit. He's having pasta for dinner, it's just me and The Mammal Who Tolerates me that have to risk the shit food.
Food fucking technology? It's called cooking, you wanker.
In other news, I find that the plastic recycling tub for glass makes a rather fine water feature in rainy weather.

Lazy. Ivy - needs little direct sun, can be grown in a large container and cover walls and fences. Excellent pollen and will attract bees. Go with the ferns and grasses, again use containers. Same for a water feature - no need to dig up a small yard - get a water butt, or something a little more attractive.
I like this.
We do have ivy but at some point I tore a load down from the wall. I think I read it could cause damage. Or it may have been due to an inchoate rage... In any case it is beginning to grow back.

I am told that making a small pond by sinking a washing up bowl into the ground, then bunging a load of pond stuff into it, is a 'thing' that people do nowadays. It sounds like a lot of effort to me though. Our downstairs neighbour in Worthing had one of those in her garden. A butler sink. Very deep.

Lunchblog: Today’s lunch was a toasted chiabatta, buttered, and filled with the left-over slow-cooked beef from Sunday. The beef had been reheated in the red-wine/caramelised-onions-and-carrots gravy. Slices of edam were gently laid atop the hot meat. ALL THE STARS.
And amipal wept, for there was no more sandwich to eat...

It was a proper island too, not one of these plastic things you see floating in the middle.

Dammit Shenguin. I now want shakshuka. I also want a Donner from the German kebab place but they don't deliver this far out.

It's quite a long way from Berlin to Clydeside.
Do the Luftwaffe not still do occasional hot deliveries?

I had spaghetti for lunch, with a sort of lentil Bolognese sauce. A 1970s take on a Bolognese sauce. Well - with lentils ...
It was nice.

Is there a lesson on yellow teas? If you dig up the patio where do you move the bodies too? After the last year a garden seems to be high up on everyone's list, although keeping it tidy is less fun but power tools can make it seem less of a chore. Cutting a hedge doesn't sound exciting but the big hedge trimmer makes it seem more exciting. Bin chat, black bins being swapped for one's half the size and apparently it's fine as we are being given a small food bin. Sorry to hear about Mr Rooster, my thoughts are with you.

Dear all, I don't know how to say this, but Mr Tent Rooster has become part of the Covid death statistics. He passed away yesterday afternoon after his condition deteriorated suddenly in the morning. Both his daughter and myself were by his side, which is some form of comfort, but not much. As you can imagine, it feels as if my world has collapsed, but I need to carry on for the sake of my family. It is hard, though. He was the love of my life. Please continue to do what the box does best (fish puns?). You know what I mean. I will need your friendship now more than ever, even if I might have to take some time out from posting. "Here it is, the measure of a man, a soul most worthy of mention. Deep is felt the loss a such a beautiful soul for even in death it draws others near like a magnet". Not one nor any here would think less of you to walk away and sign off for whatever length of time is needed to mourn, yet (here)* you are Tenthenemy - among us - and we will stand with you through it all as good souls should. May your significant other be at peace and travel well along the path of truth and know that you and yours will always have a place here in our hearts. Kane. (late edit- sorry)

Binblog: 1 x general refuse (standard dustbin, supplied by us); 1 x foodbin; 1 x recycling wheelie-bin.
We put out one black sack a week, and that’s usually only half-full. Food waste is usually two green caddy-sack’s worth. Recycling wheelie between half and full.

We put out maybe two black bin bags of general rubbish a week. We take out the recycle bag maybe four times a week.
We used to take out food waste to place in a rotating compost drum but have not done this so much recently. What's in there needs time to mulch, before being liberally applied to our four by four foot square of growing soil.

I enjoy taking out the recycling. It's good to revisit the items you have used. Reflect on the bottle of wine you drank, smile at the box of oat-cakes you consumed.
You get to piece together the person you are. Find real meaning.

Fortnightly black bin collections, we usually manage one full black bag a week.
Recycling and food waste is collected weekly, and is usually two small caddy's worth of food waste, a small number of plastic bottles, and an array of empty alcohol containers.
Food trays, other plastics and tetrapacks have to be taken to the local tip periodically.

There are green recycling bins at the back. I dispose of bottles on an as you go basis. This means I am almost never forced to tally up actual amounts. The exception is the occasional pack of 330 ml bottles. They can really stack.
