Relative to the UK India has not done that badly so far. The UK has reported 150,000 covid linked deaths if you multiply that by 1.4 billion/65 million you need to get to 3.2m deaths before India overtakes the UK on a relative basis. That is before taking in to account the massive differences in medical and social infrastructure, nutrition and relative wealth. At the moment India has recorded 250,000 covid deaths. So even if 90% haven't been reported the UK has still done worse. It is not that what s happening in India isn't appalling - it is. I am amazed people aren't up in arms about what happened in the UK. I genuinely don't understand why Johnson is popular rather than on a pike over London Bridge. If anyone is in doubt read Failures Of State. It is absolutely shocking. And it stops n December 2020, so before the worst point. The trouble with this comparison is, as amipal points out, that numbers in India are no longer reported accurately. Medical professionals, journalists and even the people who run crematoriums are being threatened in order to hide the true scale of the disaster. This is not a conspiracy theory. Which is why I suggested that it could be 10* worse in India than is reported. I don't think it is. Yet. By the time the pandemic is over I do think India will have passed where the UK is both relatively and absolutely. It's probably possible to alleviate the worst still, but it is clear that the world is not responding properly. The stupid thing is that let the virus run through such a large population almost unchecked vastly increases the risk of more variants occurring, some of which may not be controlled by current vaccines.

I think, because the UK was one of the first countries to be badly affected, it will continue to drop down the word rankings for deaths per million. It was 'up' to about third at some point last year I think.
The good people of 2090 will have a more accurate take on the pandemic, as they punt about in the sun-kissed lagoons.

If I remember, in the board game 'Pandemic', it was a bad business if the outbreaks hit India.

The glaciers will melt and a flood will come. Even for the fortunate few with the foresight to invest in a Dutch barge the damp will follow, and with it ... the black brain fungus.

I feel exceedingly blessed to have lived in a flat with high levels of damp. There were fungal spores aplenty. My white blood cells know what to do.

That Chinese rocket landing in the sea is starting to look like a missed opportunity.

The stupid thing is that let the virus run through such a large population almost unchecked vastly increases the risk of more variants occurring, some of which may not be controlled by current vaccines. And that is exactly what is happening. The prevalent strain, B.1.617, is both more contagious and has a higher mortality in the younger population. Indians also have a higher risk of cardiovascular problems, which is bad news if they do catch SARS-CoV-2.

So, it sounds like everyone is in agreement that bad things are bad.

I started reading The Decameron which dealt with the Black Death in Florence. Apparently people either hid away and prayed or got together and got pissed. Neither group fared well.
Cheers Boccaccio.

Had the plumber round. He appeared unannounced during a work zoom call - at the door I mean, he didn't zoom bomb a bunch of pensioners learning about iPads.
He's sorted the hot washer pressure. Brilliant!
The PM has just arrived home and asked if he fixed the dripping tap. Of course I had forgotten about said leaky tap and he needs to come back. I'm quite popular here as you would imagine...
Stupid Flanders.

Or, you two actually live together and your "work call" was you and Crank sitting opposite each other looking through an empty picture frame.
