I suppose a part of me thinks that China might also make a move on Taiwan (though I’m not so sure about that now). And there’s always Israel and Iran. And there’s India and China (maybe, a little bit…) I sort of think Russia and China will begin to push the territorial claims and the US will make a public display of standing against them, until you get to a point where everyone’s talked themselves into a big fight.
It’s also disconcerting to see so many people - even on the Guardian comment sections - talking about this like it’s 1938, and saying things like ‘Putin shouldn’t be appeased - we know where that ends.’
Also … I feel it. I just feel there’ll be a war. Not even nuclear war. But conventional war with Russia. I feel it. And that in itself would be a strange / bad situation to be in.

I agree that the Guardian's commentary has been unhelpfully melodramatic. It's disturbing that there's a conflation of negotiated de-escalation with appeasement (which was a popular and understandable policy in 1938). Parallels with the 1930s might be helpful, but only with the recognition that the globalisation of trade has radically altered the mathematics of decisions on going to war. In My Hubristic Opinion. I'll be in the Worry Tent if anyone needs me.

The U.S.A. will be taking a massive risk if they go all out on sanctions v Russia. The last thing they want is for the Russians and Chinese to start trading energy in non $ currencies. Part of the U.S. hegemony is based on international trade largely being dollar denominated. If they try to shut Russia out of the trade system they are likely to hasten the downfall of their dominance. The effect is likely to be the creation of a non-U.S. based system dominated by China, along with Russia and a few smaller countries. One advantage for China would be the opportunity to effectively devalue the remnimbi, offering them the chance to gain a greater share of world trade.
They may switch off the pipeline through Ukraine, offering Germany the choice between Nordstream 2 and more expensive and less reliable shipments of gas from the USA. It is not clear that in the medium term Germany would want the expensive gas.

I’m now on the Caledonian Sleeper. It has a lounge car with two menus of Scotch whisky. What a time to be alive!

I’ve just had a shower on a train. I’m sure you’ve all had showers on trains before, but not me. It was an interesting experience. A shame it was being done passing south through Rugby, with a day of work ahead.
I’d like a big three day journey on a train, ideally one with a zoo carriage and secret agent machinations.
