In all fairness to the situation, Chris Rock is the one who should be apologizing.
He scripted his comment (the 'joke') thought it through, wrote it down and planned it knowing full well that he would be centre stage at the Oscars, most likely hoping that he would get a way with it.
Will Smith reacted as he should have given previous comments that may or may not have been said about his wife's health and it was said that Jada had sat there fuming mad at Chris Rock.
Further:
Although I do not condone violence of any kind, there are moments which warrant a response.

If Chris Rock was making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia then it was a really dickish thing to do. It would have been bad at any time, but live at the Oscars.

While Chris Rock's joke was the opposite of ok Will Smith's response was not the right response. Public displays of violence are pretty much never a good idea.
It would have been better for him and his wife to walk out.
I did like the way the cameras seemed more concerned not to broadcast the swearing than the violence

There were like hundreds of people in the room. Only one of them smacked Chris Rock. It's all the people who aren't Will Smith who I blame. I'm not sure why Will Smith left it until after Chris Rock has opened his mouth, would have been much better to go in hard early doors.
