Hi all,
I spent a bit of time in a children's cancer ward when I was very young. In fact my earliest memory was wandering into a room and staring at someone with tubes coming out of them.
I haven't shared this with anyone.
In other news it's Rome's birthday which is nice.

Nastiest thing you have seen on the internet? Back when the internet was in its early phase in the early 00s my friend showed me a video of a formula 2 or 3 race where a car crashed to the side and a steward came on and another car whizzed passed just touching him and he spun around really fast like a human Catherine Wheel with blood and guts flying off as he spun.
In other news I mowed the front lawn. I kept my clothes on.

I once worked in the admissions office of a medical school, and one of the occasional things I had to do was take UCAS application forms to admissions tutors for them to look at.
It was quite hard to find some of these people - most of them medics - and you could spend a whole afternoon wandering around a hospital in search of them.
One day I was doing this and found myself directed towards one consultant I'd been looking for. I popped my head round the door and the woman - who I knew - turned round in full surgical wear and thanked me for the package. Then she said 'Oh. You probably won't like what I do'. My eyes went past her to a ... red baby: Red, and I'm pretty sure, dead, on a board; a medical equivalent of a kitchen side board.
There's nothing much to it really. I don't even know why I'm posting it here. Just a red, dead baby. Nothing to see.

I've seen the inside of my bladder in HD on some massive monitors. I have not seen my spinal fluid as yet. I've watched my intestines loop over the shoulder of Warakulasurina*. I watched a steel umbrella unfold in my trachea and glitter in the light of the probe. All those moments will be lost in time, as fluids flush down the drain. *the radiologist And the most upsetting thing that I have ever seen* was in hospital in October 2013 when my legs were removed after being three days overdue for treatment. On reflection, it's genuinely too horrible to describe - it's the only time I've ever wept in despair in front of other people. And I wasn't the only person in tears, but there isn't much, if any, give up in me. *and I have searched the internet for any photos of such an advanced state of infected ulceration and have found nothing as dreadful.

Surely any image taken of Piers Morgan should be treated in the same way as a haunted painting. Hidden from the eyes of the common man in a publicly shunned building.

I haven't shared this with anyone. In other news it's Rome's birthday which is nice. "s ieben-fünf-drei, Rom kroch aus dem Ei", was our mnemonic device in Latin class. (in German any historical date with a 3 at the end was a good candidate for those; another popular one is drei-drei-drei, bei Issus Keilerei) On our Latin tests we were required to write the date according to the Roman system, you know, ante diem [insert Roman numeral] Kalendas/Nonas/Idus, that kind of thing, and the year ab urbe condita. Not sure whether this is hardcore Latin nerdery or just another day (back) at the office for Jacob Rees-Mogg.* *I deeply apologise for putting yet another ghastly picture into your head

Apologies all, this is pretty horrific, but somehow it demanded to be shared. The least I could do was hide it behind a spoiler alert.

Chumbles I know this might seem like an overly personal question, but have your legs really been removed? No and no; on one occasion in October 13, four separate Departments’ consultants were quarrelling over my body, with me occasionally reminding them that I was still there. Most notably, shouting "Fuck off"* when they wanted to amputate my left leg. (The plastic surgeons love chopping bits off). Ironically, if they had had their way, the cause of the repeated septic shock episodes (I nearly died from that four times A&E, Intensive Care etc) was in my upper thigh so there would have to have been a second amputation at the top of my thigh! Do NOT take what doctors and medics say at face value - ALWAYS question what they say - LEARN and UNDERSTAND what is happening. *Literally, the pain was so awful that they thought I couldn't bear it. I don't blame them: when I was being treated I had a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas and Pethidine. Outside of treatment it was 10ml of morphine every 2.5h - over 3 times the maximum per diem dose AND the max dose of both Tramadol and Paracetamol and all this barely took the edge off. But once your leg is gone you can't superglue it back on.

Body part waivers I had my people* looking after this side of things for me. * My parents

lazybonesThe form signing is extensive; although the thing that takes the time is reading the paperwork... and I got them to read them to me as the drug cocktail affected my eyesight - still does from time to time. I don't begrudge the time - you would not sign a mortgage agreement without reading it first! When they were going to do that ablation op before Xmas they wrote "This one" on the appropriate leg!
