Due to the railways and then the BBC, the Brighton/Sussex accent has largely been replaced by a generic south/London accent. I keep trying to bring back Sussex words. Words like cackleberry (egg), or dumbledore (bumble bee). Also, making a conscious effort to say days of the week with a “dee” rather than a “day”. “Sundee” as an example. Do you use the word twitten? You better use the word twitten Yes indeed. I feign stupidity if someone asks me where an alley leads. “You wot mate?”

A good many years ago I was in the Highlands of Scotland having a pint and an old traveler fella said he'd tell me which town I was from by my accent. Spot on he was. He probably had a bet with me no doubt of a pint. Considering it was hundreds of miles away I was very impressed. My grandfather had a stall in Surrey Street market Croydon many years ago.

There used to be a Pie & Mash shop in St. Paul's Cray, Orpington. I went in there with a mate for some scoffing. A thick fug of fag smoke, blinds pulled down and a couple of punters reading the Racing Post. We didn't try the jellied eels, the pie was enough to put us off going again.

Playing FH5. I can't stand the kids who just bash into you for no reason. Some kid kept doing that to me on a championship against unbeatable drivatars. "Don't worry, that'll buff right out". So I done a few 'Cranks' on him. Cue "I'm on your team..."
Loser.

When I lived in England I tended to speak slower and more precisely - unless someone was giving me jip at which point the Glaswegian was hammed up.
My pal from Yorkshire came to mine and we bumped into a pal who I was chatting to in the street. The lad said it sounded like a verbal assault.
Tbf, strong Dundonian or Aberdonian is probably harder to understand as folk are less exposed to it than West of Scotland accents.
Strong Leeds, Brum etc can be equally tricky.

I have an accent but I don’t know what it is. I think I drop consonants like a southern softie, but use tough short vowels like castle rather than carstle or France rather than Frarnce.

Story has it that during the first world war, in the trenches, the Norfolk Regiment would issue the challenge 'Hey'ye far gorra dickey bor?', to which every Norfolk man knows has only one response.
Apparently they were forced to stop this practise, after having shot up several other friendly British forces who hadn't got a bloody clue what they were on about.

Actually it is a reasonably well spoken Brummie accent. Not Solihull posh, but not impenetrable. Definitely an accent though and norra mere twang on certain words. I can speak proper when i want, but it's definitely still Brummie When i went to Bristol there was an american student in the corridor in the first year who was fascinated by my pronouniation of fock off.

I went to college in the east end, mile end road, lived in Finsbury Park and Walthamstow and spent most of my working life in Victoria.
The only thing I know about "South of the River" is after a certain time the Black Cabs with their vaunted "Knowledge" didn't know where we wanted to go, cunts.
The very friendly people outside clubs who asked if we needed a cab always took us there, even if we had to tell them how to get there, they were a lot cheaper as well. 4*
