hi
I think Croydon is kind of ok. Itβs just a town.
I have a question β¦
If someone says βeffingβ rather than βfuckingβ does that still count as βeffing and jeffingβ?

I made some houmous last night, but with no lemon, because we didnβt have any. The internet suggested using lime and/or white vinegar instead, which I did. Vinegary houmous β¦. So not really houmous at all β¦
I also played Black Desert.
Not for me. Although β¦ I got to create myself as a wizard, and itβs a bit like a Japanese World of Warcraft (I think). I donβt think Iβll ever play it again. Loads of people mucking about. It seemed designed for PCs. IBM Compatibles. Considered downloading Baldurβs Gate 3. I want a thrilling sandbox game. The best sandbox game ever made. Nothing fits the bill.

I've got a question too. When I was at the music festival recently, two of the singers introduced themselves by saying they were from 'South London'. What is the cultural significance of this? What are they trying to convey by telling you that they are from South London as opposed to North? Why do they think it matters?
I've never heard anyone say they come from East Edinburgh or West Birmingham.

Ottm: I've been listening to Simon Parkin's videogames podcast. That Peter Molyneaux is a piece of work. He's lucky people forgot about him after Sean Murray became the worst person in history.

I've never heard anyone say they come from East Edinburgh or West Birmingham. Iβve sometimes wondered this too. I think itβs a way of saying theyβre keeping it real. Iβve no idea. People donβt often say theyβre from βNorth Londonβ, though North London is sometimes used in a pejorative way, to reference an area of βliberal media privilegeβ. But are people talking about the areas of London in the north when they do this? Like Hampstead, Highgate, Muswell Hill. Or do they mean everywhere north of the river? Hmmm.

I've got a few mates who live in various parts of south London. They sometimes make disparaging comments about anyone or anything 'north of the river'
I think 'north of the river' is probably better tbh

If I had to rank London by compass bearing, I'd probably go:
North South West East

Actually maybe people do talk about being from North London, West London, East London. Hmmm. Maybe you hear more people talk about being from βSouth Londonβ because it usually means everywhere south of the river, whereas north of the river is split into North, East and West. Iβm not sure where the centre is? Centre Point? Though thatβs often referred to as being in the West-end. I think β¦ I think β¦ Maybe Destry will know. Though heβs from South London (maybe?) so his perceptions will be skewed.

The north/ south London thing is dumb. If your a white middle class Londoner then chances are you're stinking rich compared to most others. Hailing from South or East London doesn't put them on a footing with the common man.

But why do musical performers feel the need to tell people in a field on the edge of Edinburgh that they are specifically from south London? I think it must must be something to do with 'keeping it real', as Lazybones suggests. But why do they not realise that the people in the field do not understand about their parochial micro-cultural symbols, and likely care even less? It fills me with rage, tbh and also tbf.

Apparently there is a plaque on the wall confirming this.

If you are from north London and keeping it real you say you are from Hackney. That's basic. In west London it's acton or Hammersmith. South London is all terrible apart from Dulwich (possibly). As is east London.

As is east London. Where I was born it was called North East London (northeast of the old London Wall) just outside of Bow bells (modern distance) and part of Essex, then they had a shuffle and Greater London swallowed it up after some borough name changes.

People in Brum sometimes say they are from Handsworth if they are actung street. If you go any further west you in West Brom. There isn't much west side to Birmingham. North, eats, south, southwest, yes. But if you go directly west you only have the jewellery quarter and past that you are almost in Smethwick which is part of West Brom (sandwell). You can say you are from Solihull or Sutton Coldfield (= posh Brum) or Chembo/Chemobyl (Chelmsley Wood and surrounds = rough Brum) But apart from for football i don't think there's that much very strong identification with smaller areas.

I have a London/Southern accent and when I moved to Wales some Scouser said to me friggin ell mate that's some weird accent you've got, like he'd never heard it before. With my accent I think I'm viewed as some kind of exotic alien creature.
