Not to piss on your chips & mayo Lazybones... The canal tour we were on says they're no longer issuing new licences for moorings in Amsterdam so you'll be in a bidding war for one or get one with the boat. Time Bandits is on Apple TV+. They've shown two episodes and then one a week. Wait till it's all out and grab a week's trial, or steal it. I think I would like a boat without a mooring. www.apolloduck.co.uk/boat/bridgewater-42-cruiser-stern-for-sale/529806

I love this. I know sometimes it’s considered bad luck to change the name of a ship. Does that apply to 42 foot cruiser stern narrowboats? I’d change it from LAZY BONES to Lazybones. Would that even register? Maybe it’s just an issue of typography. The sea gods are fickle. But maybe the canal gods are more easy-going.

Ceremonies For Renaming a Boat
There are many different ceremonies for re-naming your boat — you can look them up online or ask your local boating community which they prefer. Typically, though, you must first remove all traces of the old name. This means removing the name from the hull, burning the old log books and paperwork, and requesting that the gods to forget the old name. Then, you re-christen the boat with alcohol, normally good champagne. First offer half to the water, from east to west, and then some to the boat, and some then some for you and your first mate to toast the new vessel. Another, less desirable, option is to have a virgin urinate over the bow

You are also to address the mighty powers of the four wind gods - the great Boreas, Zephyrus, Eurus, and Notus - pouring champagne out as you face each of them: north wind, west wind, east wind, and then south wind.

I suppose if I was to do all that for just a minor typographical change I’d be ok. Covering all the bases.

Morning one and awl!
Living in a boat sounds alluring at first, but then you have to deal with water foul and sea devils. Plus there's a lingering threat that your house might sink and drown everyone who fares upon her, that isn't present on land based houses.

Or live in a proper building and occasionally rent a boat for a week or two? The dream of living on a houseboat seems to be one that is best left as a dream. Like the dream about wandering the streets looking for a phone box and realising you are not dressed. Sea levels are rising. Which is why I live near Barr Beacon and not in Amsterdam.

If you live in Venice, Amsterdam or in Lincolnshire the threat of a sinking house is pretty real.

what do you do on a boat? Sail the seven canals, occasionally hoisting the Jolly Roger and tutting about mooring fees and queues at lock gates. Also get drunk and crash slowly into the side of the canal, leaving a small scrape mark on the paint.

There seems to be more than one of the same name for sale, Facebook has it up as a 57ft registered at Stone in Staffordshire. There are quite a few scams where boats are concerned, you should always go to a bona fide marina and get a survey done before you buy. The rule of thumb is around £12-1400 avg per foot of boat, you can more for newer ones or less for older designs, semi-trad and trad types with diesel engines are the more common but harder work. I wonder if Lazy had a survey done?

Not normally Lazy as long as you 'cleanse' the previous name from the boat and you can have more than one boat of the same name.

what do you do on a boat? Boat chat, Size matters for cost typically £1,100 to £1,800 per foot of boat, ownership runs from £35-55/160k for a 'second hand' one, which are weathered (in need of work) or rebuilt (WYSIWYG) or new built (Brand new from manufacturer/boat show). Licences are for the type of mooring you have not for driving the boat, anyone can steer/drive it as there is no licence needed (see canal and river trust website). Running costs are around £12-15,000 per annum but can be less. Engines can be diesel/steam, electric or a hybrid. They can be hard work for maintenance. You can typically only stay at a mooring for 2 weeks max depending on your licence type. canalrivertrust.org.uk/You travel up river going through locks, until you are as far North as you want to get, then (summer time) you travel back down the river heading South for winter all the while taking in stunning views and working up a sweat at the locks for the excuse (not that you need one) to go to a local Pub and there are always events of some type to go to as well. Kane - 1st mate on the Pelican (30ft Yacht, day sailer) from time to time, (I've even got a cap)!

Also get drunk and crash slowly into the side of the canal, leaving a small scrape mark on the paint. Been there done that, out on a narrow boat one time we got hit by strong side winds and canal boats only go a maximum of 4-6 mph, we pretty much ended up going sideways up the canal!

Plumber been and gone. Tap fixed (5 mins) and then a further 2 hours ripping the bathroom walls apart investigating a leak, which turned out to be from upstairs (The Jehovans).
The positives I take from this experience:-
1) The Jehovans will have their bathroom ripped apart due to the Tids contingent. Ho-ho-ho... 2) The drilling and hammering woke up the weirdo next door. 3) New bathroom suite. (maybe)
All in all, a productive mornings work.
