Someone I worked with in Dundee told me she was burgled of nearly everything in her flat shortly after moving into the multis. They caught the culprit, her neighbour, who had basically furnished their flat with all her stuff.
I've never been robbed though, taking advantage of the same advice faceless has dished out above.

Never been burgled, but had a car stolen once. When the rozzers told me it had been found a few days later several miles away I had to ask them for a lift, as had no way to get out to it. They kindly obliged, but when we got there it had been nicked again.
We found it a short while later, some kids had let the handbrake off and rolled it down a hill into some woods. The steering lock and ignition were all ripped out so couldn't start it with the keys, so after some fumbling managed to hot-wire the ignition on, but couldn't get the starter to spin, and so ended up with 2 coppers sweating their nuts off pushing me in my Mk1 fiesta back up the hill out of the woods until we could find somewhere flat enough to bump start it.
I was uneasy driving back home as the tank had been almost run dry, the side window and steering column were smashed, and it was obviously hot-wired. To avoid getting nabbed as a joyrider I was tempted to ask them for an escort back home, but felt I might be chancing my luck.
