They're a lot cheaper; mind you a virtual meal isn't terribly filling so prepare as I used to when visiting my mother. Beans on toast ... 50 miles later I could chat with equanimity, whilst she cremated perfectly good ingredients and served them to me under fictional names. Golubci was one special triumph - the cabbage leaves were so overcooked that they mostly melted once she placed the grey pabulum of the filling on them.  This is how it should look, though bestwith a strong paprika and tomato sauce

This was the other point of the beans as I would have to retire to the bathroom for stentorian groans and megafarts (she was hard of hearing). After this we could get to the cooperative crossword solving we both enjoyed ... *Mum hated any explicit words for body parts and functions; daughter of a Victorian she put antimacassars on the armchairs until we packed her off to the home, once she had gone far enough along the dementia road to wander out the house without closing doors behind her or remembering where she lived or, when I located her, who I was. "You're not my son. Where is Godfrey?" "I'm your other son..." "Nonsense, I only have one son. Do you think I'm mad?" It does feel odd to be written out of reality by your own revisionist mother. |
