So, we're fucked, who saw that coming, eh? Oh. @tenthen, how is DQB2? I'm assuming you're playing no. 2 here. It's piqued my interest. Yes, it's the sequel. For you and anyone who's interested, I recently came across a Kotaku video where Jason Schreier and resident Dragon Quest aficionado Tim Rogers are showcasing the game (without spoilers) by happily messing around in it for an hour (with Rogers asking the viewers to petition Kotaku to pay him for streaming about 20-30 more hours of the game. Nice work if you can get it). Early on they sum up the game as "like Minecraft but good", a very apt description.* The writing is funny (I haven't seen enough of it yet, but apparently the story's good, too) and the mixture of exploration and town management is just right - if you are tired of one you just do the other. Building and crafting is interesting and fun, and whilst you are being guided through the creative process in story mode the game gives you a large play area where you can do what you want. Combat is nothing to write home about (it's basically slashing at enemies; there's no Dragon Quest style turn based battle) but lets you level up easily. There's no weapon degradation. There's no need to be familiar with anything Dragon Quest at all, it just works by itself. It should, however, come with a large warning label as it's terribly addictive. There's a demo on the Switch (presumably also on PS 4) which is basically the tutorial. It gives you a small glimpse of the gameplay and lets you transfer your safe file to the full version, but the video I posted is more representative of what the game is about. A sequel to a spin-off. Who'd thought that that could be so good. *I have never played Minecraft because it wasn't good. |

@tenthen, thanks! That pretty much seals it for me. I quite enjoyed Minecraft but bemoaned the lack of story, so it sounds right up my street. If I start downloading it tonight it might be ready in time for my night shifts . . .

I walked the Rivelin Valley today in searing heat and then had a steak. It's not quite flying ant day here, but they are scurrying around on the ground, so maybe a day or so away.

Download size is apparently a mere 2.5 GB (edit: even less on the Switch, under 2 GB), so that shouldn't be a problem. Just don't say I never warned you how addictive this game is. |

I downloaded the demo of DQB2. Couldn't get on with the intro. Generic hero wakes up and has to save the day from ancient evil bad guy.
I sacked it off and played Zelda instead.
