Football is deeply flawed, it's more akin to World Wrestling Entertainment, than a sport. The steady erosion of fair play, with the acceptance of 'professional' fouls, diving*, shirt tugging, nudging and the brutal, sometimes career threatening 'tackle' has taken the 'sport' to the point where acting and simulation are nearly as important as the basic skills. When commentators say "He took one for the team." I normally stop listening or watching; it sickens me that the moral corruption in the sport I used to love has reached the point where pundits and commentators believe it's acceptable to foul. This lack of moral compass is reflected in the more thuggish fuckers who attend matches as much for the opportunity to beat up the opposition's fans as the game. And role models who show the concept that cheating is acceptable if you can get away with it are no different in moral terms than muggers, thieves and perjurers. Racism is an inherent part of this tribal thuggery. I can speak more directly about London teams, where the anti-semitic element of the worst Arsenal supporters is only throttled back by the threat of sanctions at a Spurs / Arsenal game. But outside the match, going home you'd better be careful which way you go home. It's worse with Millwall... *Deli Alli ought to be on the stage... |

So far as I am aware anti-Semitism against Spurs is largely limited to a cluster of London clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, Millwall and West Ham.
I've heard only a couple of isolated comments at away games art Spurs games and those are what i'd describe as mild rather than hateful.
I'd also say that there is very little violence at football these days and it is still declining even though there has been an upsurge in anti-social behaviour since the Brexit poll was announced. There's still plenty of aggressive ignorance and low level nastiness, but really it is all sweetness and light compared to the way it used to be.
We have fewer arrests per season than we used to have at individual local derbies.

All that granted, but my point is that that decrease in overt thuggery is down to more effective sanctions by both clubs and the fuzz. However, the wavering moral compass, the near blatant cheating in a sport which millions of young people play and follow is dispiriting... at least our political leaders, who exhibit many of the same traits (simulation, lying, corruption) aren't used as role models. Football matters more to a lot of people than political parties so the standards of behaviour, the example matters more.
I wonder how much my Cassandra-like pronouncements are due my jaundiced and increasingly cynical views of the antics of political leaders across the world ...
