Last fall [Autumn 2018], Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos charged his company’s studio division to produce bigger shows with a “global appeal,” in an attempt to compete with other streaming video companies in the race to produce high-end original content. Since then, Amazon has moved quickly to begin developing an impressive slate of genre television shows that include adaptations of novels such as Ringworld, Snow Crash, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Amazon has acquired the rights to another huge book: Consider Phlebas, the first installment of Iain M. Banks’s space opera Culture series.

Oh bollocks /edit: I should have searched further. To be fair, although I was looking forward to a series or two, a lot of the 'action' is a backdrop to a philosophical dialogue. You can both love and hate The Culture and applaud the freedoms and condemn the paradoxically, iron-bound limits on activity. For me there's a dynamic tension in that which informs the action... *sigh* Jeff dun fucked up here!

Hi!
Alas, I still have my old gnashers...
I'm just off out to Tesco for our click and collect food (and booze) order. Exciting times.
Later I am hoping to get some GAME action, probably Days Gone. Then it's the England v Iceland footy. What could go wrong....

Killed it. I'm back from Tesco. Beat that, punks. I walked to the local shop and failed* to buy The Guardian. *due to it being sold out** and not for any other reason. **I think they carry about 3 copies.

How do you comment on the articles in the print edition? Do you scribble furiously in the margins?

I'm pretty certain prudy01 prints off the Chatterbox and writes his comments in crayon on it.

Afternoon. Stayed up till about 3 playing Tony hawk & drinking whiskey. Feeling a bit under the weather today. Got to say am absolutely loving Tony hawk. It’s fantastic stuff. May play some wasteland 3 tonight though. Only done about 2 hours so need to sink my teeth into it.

First time back to the library since lockdown. Social distancing measures include it being unmanned, no chairs, childrens' books coming in a pack of five, and not being able to leaf through books prior to borrowing.
This did at least mean the pile of books we borrowed for the boy were a surprise for all, at least.

Afternoon. I had a pretty shitty evening yesterday. It all started when (too late in the day) it occurred to me that in addition to having an Ocado delivery today I should maybe book my next delivery after that because there's such a demand for the new M&S products (yeah, me neither) that delivery slots might not be available any time soon. Indeed, the soonest delivery slot was next Thursday, so I booked it and started filling the virtual trolley with groceries. For this I was using the mobile phone app, which had some new features. At one point I had the contents of the trolley displayed as little icons with only two options visible - "checkout" and "add to order". I wasn't finished with the shopping and so, because I didn't want to go through the checkout yet, clicked the "add to order" button. Big mistake. All the stuff from the trolley was added in one fell swoop to the order for today's delivery. This despite the app showing that the slot on Thursday was still being reserved. I had to go and edit today's delivery and manually remove all the unwanted extra stuff, then go back to the Thursday delivery and fill the trolley again. By this time I had a headache and was getting impatient as I had other things to do, such as preparing dinner. So in my haste I did the same thing again. Dear Ocado, when I want to edit an existing shopping I click the "edit" button and edit the existing shopping. I do not book a different delivery slot and fill the trolley and then expect it to be transferred to an existing shopping. What is this for? Who asked for it?
At this point I gave up on the phone app and decided to sort out the mess after dinner. Dinner was nothing more than Flammkuchen from the freezer because the lack of Ocado delivery slots since the beginning of September has resulted in a fairly empty fridge. When I removed the first Flammkuchen from the oven the sheet of baking paper caught fire. This had happened to me before, so I knew that because of the speed of the flames there was nothing I could do except wait for the paper to burn up and hope that nothing else would catch fire. Fortunately it didn't and I even managed to save the Pref. Mam.'s dinner from the inferno. Dinner was tasty but it had been a somewhat exhausting evening. Today's Tintin bonanza (all delivered individually packed, from a variety of booksellers up and down the country)! All paperback, all in English, okay condition: The Black Island The Shooting Star Red Rackham's Treasure Tintin and the Picarosand Tintin and the Lake of Sharks, which was not supposed to be in this collection, but I'll take it (I've read it before and watched the film).

tenthenemy commiserations, is there any reason you don't use Tesco or Sainsburys? At the beginning of the lockdown I tried Sainsbury's but they wouldn't take on new customers. Not sure what the situation is now, but I should be looking for some kind of backup, although I expect that excitement about the M&S stuff is going to die down. Tbf, Ocado has been amazingly good for us during the lockdown and this has been the first time I had any kind of issue, and it's clearly just a dumb revamp of their app. The grandchildren's parents use Tesco delivery but I've hardly ever shopped with them (there's a whole thing going on with Tesco buying land nearby more than a decade ago for a store that never materialised), so I don't know them well enough.

tenthenemyI am curious about your Tintin habit. Are you just filling in gaps in your collection or have you joined a Tintin version of Laithwaites? Or is somebody sending you books in an unsolicited manner, a serial killer for example?
