ah phew, thought we were losing it.
I have a question:
What would be the best martial art or fighting technique be to administer a savage beating to the entire Tory cabinet? No edged weapons allowed, everything else ok.

Most of this is true, though I don’t think you’re right about Katame Waza translating as ground techniques. The term for this is Ne Waza, if I remember rightly, though it’s often used interchangeably with Katame Waza - grappling techniques. I’m wondering if we’re even arguing about the same thing. I know judo comes from jujitsu, or the various 19th century schools of it. But these were synthesised into a form that could be practiced safely (as you said) and it was made safer by sidelining the Ateme Waza - the striking - into the kata so you would never be practicing it in randori / free practice with someone else. All I’m saying is that judo is pretty much all grappling. And always has been. You can only throw someone if you’ve grappled them first - if you’ve got a hold - a grip - on them. The seven Katas of Judo - M Kawaishi is a book I would recommend for Katas The Cannon of Judo - Kyuzo Mifune being the 'Bible' of Judo. "Judo is the way of the highest or most efficient use of both physical and mental energy. Through training in the attack and defence techniques of judo, the practitioner nurtures their physical and mental strength, and gradually embodies the essence of the Way of Judo. Thus, the ultimate objective of Judo discipline is to be utilised as a means to self-perfection, and thenceforth to make a positive contribution to society". Kano Kancho. While it may >be< stated that Kano Kancho was also 'one of the leading international spokesmen in Japan's bid for the 1940 Olympics' this wasn't always the case in antiquity and it took time for Kancho to accept the inclusion.

There is an argument that 'Kodokan Judo' by Jigoro Kano is the 'Bible' of judo, because Jigoro Kano created it. 'Through training in the attack and defence techniques of judo the practitioner nurtures their physical and mental strength, and gradually embodies the essence of the Way of Judo'.So you embody the essence of the way of judo through training in the attack and defence techniques, most of which are ... dependent on grappling ... but I'm getting the sense you don't want to talk about that anymore ...

further to my 'Judo inclusion' comment. It wasn't until AFTER Kano Kancho passed that Judo was included in the Olympics.

This has been said by some but the true 'bible ' is the Cannon as it was written by Kano Kancho's student Mifune O'Sensei. Grappling is a part of the art but not in any way the whole of the art, much of Judo's origins have been lost in time due to the competitive styles out there and the rules regarding certain techniques in competitions. sometime I think it's wise to go back to the beginning to remind yourself of the why's and wherefore's of your art form.

I know - grappling isn't all of the art, but it is most of the art, regardless of its origins. Judo would still be recogniseable without the striking techniques. Not so much without the various throwing techniques, the foot techniques, the strangulation techniques and the joint locking techniques - all of which require you getting a grip on your opponent ...

You can grapple someone easily enough without a jacket. Maybe what you're saying is that the essence of judo is in sensing another's movement and manipulating it to put them on the floor (though this wouldn't cover strangling, pinning or arm-locking techniques). That does make sense though I can't think of many (if any) throwing techniques that don't start with you getting a grip on your opponent ...

We should be talking about the gate being fixed. It's almost done. A big fresh gate. There's just one more visit to complete the wood stain.
