What we're looking at is actually a pair of stars that orbit each other. Every 7.9 years or so, their orbits bring them very close together, and that interaction releases a huge amount of matter, especially heavier elements like carbon, which then expands in a sphere outward from the stars. Wolf-Rayet 140 is in its death throes.

1. Lenny Henry, who I asked if he could move so I could get to my drink.
