I admire the West Midlands attitude to football rivalry, without fully understanding all the connotations. I once knew a guy who told me he no longer spoke to his best friend because despite both being Villa fans, the friend had the wrong opinion as to which of Blues and Albion was the more despicable.

I once went to a work meeting in the West Midlands at a company called High Duty Alloys. I think it might have been near Redditch but not sure. Anyway, we went for lunch in a pub that I was told "Ron Atkinson goes in a lot". I can't remember the name of the pub and Ron wasn't in. Probably around 2002, so not sure if this before, or after, Ron coming out as a massive racist.

Sun is out and barbecue going well. It's what she would have wanted. Suns out, Guns out? Tempted to flash the beer gut, but she's an old dear next door and she may never recover.

I think that depends where you live to an extent. Blues are very much south east of the city with a spread to the north east and south west.
WBA are to the wesr and northwest. AVFC are all over the place, but mostly north.
Around Sutton it's probably 60% AVFC, 30% WBA, 10% BCFC. We are an oppressed minority.
If your mate/his friend came from the black country they might well dislike Albion more. The rivalry is reasonably intense. If the other comes from Brum there is no argument. West Brom are irrelevant.
The grounds are all quite close. Its a bit less than 5 miles from St Andrews to the Hawthorns. VP is not on the shortest route between the grounds. It's 6 mes via VP.
I've not been to a AVFC v WBA game, but I don't think they are as intense. By which I mean they are allowed normal kick off times. All our games v AVFC are strictly 12pm Sunday kick offs. With enough police to man a royal funeral. The police put up some fantastic barriers as well. Like mobile Berlin walls.
Our games at WBA are ok. I was able to wander round on Wednesday unmolested. Both before and after the game. There is a healthy rivalry still. Loads of WBA fans got kicked out after our second goal. And there were plenty of drink containers came fling across.

W*lv*s is the worst to go to. V*ll* Park is all separated outside so you barely get to smile at them. Albion is ok to go to. At Molineux though it's very open and their fans don't always appreciate a gentle ribbing. I have seen a number of fights there. The police are known to join in enthusiastically as well. They have let the dogs join in sometimes. It's all very local. The rules are easy to pick up on. You just have to see a few people beaten up to understand.

I was talking to my dad about West Midlands football rivalry and he claims it’s worse than it used to be. He said that his dad was a Birmingham City fan who was pretty indifferent to him supporting Aston Villa. He gave me some other evidence to back up his stance but … I typed it out and deleted it. Not good content
It’s just bantz isn’t it? Footy bantz.

Based on my limited experience of Birmingham football rivalry - Aston Villa fans are broadly indifferent to the other teams, and think it’s a bit weird that Blues fans seem to hate them so much.
The Lord Snootys of the West Midlands conurbation.
I quite like Aston Villa. There - I’ll say it. All out in the open.

Absolutely indifferent until we beat them.... They were a proper bunch of cunts after they won stuff in the early 1980s. A lot of snideness. That caused a lot of bitterness and resentment. When you have 10* years of 'yes, but we've won the European Cup' at some point in every conversation it gets a bit tiresome. It didn't help that we were awful for so many years.
I think the rivalries are less intense. In the 1980s there would generally be 100+ arrested at every derby. And running fights afterwards. You don't get that so much. I suppose while it has dialed down a lot it has not gone down to the same extent as football trouble generally, so it perhaps stands out more.
Until the 1970s I think a few people went to two local clubs. Not many travelled to away games. My dad sometimes went to VP in the late 60s when Blues were away. I can't imagine many do it now.
Hunter Davies perhaps. For many years he was a season ticket holder at Spurs ans at Arsenal.

I did once sit in a train from Aston to Birmingham city centre surrounded by drunk Aston Villa fans. They were singing ‘Shit on the City’. An absolute disgrace. I was of a good mind to draft an email to a local paper, but instead I just sat there, pulling my head down into my neck.

A very clever piece of video / audio grafting... a part of me wants to find the yank that did this and introduce their rectum to my walking stick and another part wants to applaud. The video is from a 40k media CGI film

I guess now we all just wait for all the companies and corporate brands to announce that the mourning period is over, and we can go back to the warm embrace of their goods and services

I do stuff listening to audiobooks; it helps to divert my mind from the nonsense that goes on in my body. The last two I have finished were:
Christian Cameron's The Ill-Made Knight (Book 1 of the Chivalry series. 21h of delight) - an aging knight recounts his career and life... William Gold. A cook's boy - the lowest of the low - who had once been branded as a thief. William dreams of being a knight, but in this savage new world of intrigue, betrayal and greed, first he must learn to survive. The narrator: Saul Reichlin is excellent.
Marko Kloos's Centers of Gravity, Book 8 in his Frontlines series. It's good (very reminiscent of Scalzi's stuff, but unrelenting military grim). The FPV guy is very annoying at times, but the action and the universe and the enemy imagined is coherent and interesting - think Starship Troopers with less rah-rah stuff
Just started Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon, which I (and a lot of you) have already read in print... Todd McLaren seems a good narrator so far.

Supposedly it’s wall to wall queen today on TV? The broadcasters all in the pocket of big queen.
Looking forward to tomorrow when it’s all over and we can get back to a dry bumming from the government and pals.
Did some work today, as I couldn’t be bothered to do it on Friday. It’s what she would have wanted.
Splatoon 3 - top banana. I’m getting better at it, or everyone else is getting worse.
On the trains again tomorrow
Is todays wordle a word? No

I thought Telly Savalas had brought the Brummies together with his televisual love letter to the inner ring road back in 81. What a shame his message of peace fell on deaf ears.

This funeral is quite piper-forward. Bag-piper forward. I hope King Chad continues with Her Late Majesty’s enthusiasm for the pipes. A piper on every corner. Nothing quite like a military band to straighten the spine. The artillery gunners did sterling work. BOOM! Synchronised impeccably with the BONG of Big Ben.

Also the Witcher tv show seems well done so far, I missed all the tits and dragons as didn’t have sky/kodi working when it was on, is the new one any good?
