muffrat 's reason for varifocals is totally sound. "the small print on a toothpaste tube" this does needs some explanation.

I also sometimes find the football scores hard to read. Tell me about it. On second thoughts, don't. It's depressing enough as it is.

Why not have 2 types of glasses? Or do you constantly look at things far away and close to you in a short time? <edit>For context, I have one pair of glasses to see things far away, If I want read a book I take my glasses off. I've been shortsighted and had to wear specs since I was 7. Just literally the last couple of months, I've been unable to easily resolve small text, eg the small print on a toothpaste tube, or smaller text in a browser window on my phone. Taking my (short sight) glasses off helps but I still can't focus on fine details like I used to, and it's come on pretty quick. 2 pairs of glasses would work, but how often do you pick up your phone in a day, or have to read text smaller than, say 10pt? It's more than you think. And the arseache of juggling 2 pairs of specs doesn't seem worth it. I could increase the text size on my phone, but that only solves half the problem, and makes using a phone less enjoyable. Until you can't do it, I suppose you never notice how often you look at something far away, and then something close up, but it's pretty fucking often I also ordered a new pair of single vision short sight lenses, which I expect I'll use 90% of the time. The varifocals, I imagine I'll use (if I can get used to the bastards) round the house, so that I can watch the telly and read the newspaper / my phone without having to scramble for another pair of specs. I remember my Grandad and his constant fight to find the right glasses for the occasion - can't be arsed with that (he had his 'lookers' and his 'see-ers', and as previously mentioned, never the right pair for the occasion) Sorry Felice - I've read that back and it sounds a bit preachy/wanky/supercilious I'm just trying to describe my recent experience of being a different kind of four-eyed prick than I used to be

muffrat 's reason for varifocals is totally sound. "the small print on a toothpaste tube" this does needs some explanation. You need to know how many milligrams of Sodium Laurel Sulphate you're ingesting. That's the catalyst that activates the Flouride that turns on the 5G aerials the government put in your brain with the covid vaccine. Besides, what else are you going to read if you've forgotten to take your phone when you go for a shit?

As if the brain-dead fuckwit is going to listen to the leader of Britain's second largest trading partner. (After all, she's quite relaxed about breaking international law to piss off our biggest trading partner.) The Huff highlights this issue. Only puns can save our sanity...

All this glasses talk . . . it feels like the subtext is that you're all a bunch of wankers.

I'm banned from reading books on the loo now. One chapter turns into two, then three, then all of a sudden you can't feel your legs and you've missed a child's birthday

Dan Brown books. The chapters are really short. So 3 is less than 10 minutes reading.
Finnegans Wake is less suitable. Though it will get you out the bathroom quickly.

I saw this earlier. Interesting to note that the name on the 'spine' and the 'cover' of the 'book' isn't the guy who wrote and drew the manga, but rather the self-regarding prick who glued a bunch of them together and called it art

Read it. * * (for clarification; that's read as in red, not read as in reed)

I read lots of stuff that isn't proper reading. Accountancy manuals* tax treaties*, Edge, hi-fi porn football programmes, this place. I'm not a snob about reading. I've just never got on with graphic novels.
* only for work, honest.
Unless you are taking ideas from or contributing to some of the more sinister parts of the internet** then any reading is probably a good thing.
** or printed publications

My specs are Varifocals, glass ground thin so they're not like beer bottles and they have transition lenses for the sun. More often this is used in winter here than summer. Hello. Been to my pals for dinner and all the wine.
