Until the big Waterstones in Birmingham opened I think Foyles was the biggest bookshop in the UK. Obviously it was completely crazy the way it was run. It took 10 minutes, not one minute to buy a book It probably had your book in stock, but there was no way of knowing. What's bizarre is that it didn't apparently start off like that. It was only when Christina Foyle got control that it became so bad. When I moved to London in the late 1990s I mostly got books at the nearby Waterstones or Dillons over the road (or Sportspages). There was something magnificently crazy about Foyles back then, but the craziness was the main thing. It's a bit of a shame that it's now owned by Waterstones. I'd prefer a few shops, not just one. I still can't get over: "...which made you get a "chit" to take to the till, which they then graciously sold the book to you" I took a book to the till and they sent be somewhere else to get it authorised. <edit>BEFORE I could buy it. Madness

It was. I've never seen anything like it. Your book came nicely wrapped though. When you eventually got it. Which was great. Unless you wanted to read it.
I used to love to wander from HMV to Virgin via Berwick St. Then down to Foyles. Or from Virgin to HMV then down Berwick Street to Waterstones.
Bookshops last as books are very heavy.

No human being would stock books like this.

Unsworths was also a good bookshop at that time (Tott Ct R?). Plenty of discounted dry tomes about dead people. Later they moved to Euston Rd and now they are online only. Sad.

There was a book shop near TCR which only sold Crime and SciFi/Fantasy books, it was incredible, I think it was called "Murder One". <edit>From Kanepedia: "Murder One was a bookshop in the Charing Cross Road from 1988 to 2009, "catering to readers interested in hard-to-find and collectable crime, mystery, romance and science fiction literature".[1] It was the first UK bookshop to specialize in the crime and mystery genres, and at its opening in 1988 the largest specialist "genre" bookshop in Europe.[2] It was owned by the novelist Maxim Jakubowski. The bookshop closed upon the owner's retirement in January 2009." <edit><edit>I forgot about the romance stuff.

I've been a bit footy-jaded over last couple of days, finding it hard to get too excited for today's game, particularly after the USA match. 25 mins into the BBC's hour long preamble for the match and I'm bang up for it again. GRRR!

I've never known a WC where I feel so little pump, Qatar location is a start but lets face it, if "the team of your choice" does well you'll watch it.
I look forward to the next World Cup in Russia.

I 100% agree It's felt very little like a world cup from the start I'd love to have had the brass nuts to have boycotted it, but as I've found out on previous matchdays and tonight, it only takes 10 mins of jingoistic B-roll from the BBC and I'm a sucker again. Football, eh?

I liked Borders. It had lots of books on thin paper that no other book shop had. Then there was the big Oxford Street Waterstones which had an amazing collection of horror fiction from yesteryear.
I don’t think I ever bought anything from old Foyles.

Watching the Women's team winning this year was one of the best football tournaments I've seen*.
More importantly, to me, was you weren't worried about them, there was always the belief that they'll hold on or come back, I've rarely had that feeling for the men's team.
*The first I can remember was WC 1970 and England losing a 2-0 lead.

A World Cup in winter just feels odd. And you feel a bit guilty for any happiness you do get out of it because of the controversies.
