What's shenguins joke? I don't get it. I got the Hobbit on tape when I was a kid and they pronounced gandolf "gandalve". Apparently that's the right way to say it. But i bet it Frod o lot of people off at first. tolkiengateway.net/wiki/OliphauntsAre you saying I've been pronouncing Gandalf(sic!) wrong all this time? Edit: hang on, I'm getting an advertisement for hearing aids. This might have something to do with it.

What's shenguins joke? I don't get it. Grey as a mouse, Big as a house, Nose like a snake, I make the earth shake, As I tramp through the grass; Trees crack as I pass. With horns in my mouth I walk in the South, Flapping big ears. Beyond count of years I stump round and round, Never lie on the ground, Not even to die. Oliphaunt am I, Biggest of all, Huge, old, and tall. If ever you'd met me You wouldn't forget me. If you never do, You won't think I'm true; But old Oliphaunt am I, And I never lie.

I was about to post that it is an appalling Tolkien fan in-joke, based largely on Shenguin being a twat.
But Shenguin got there first.

Hmmm... so he walks in the South ey?
Meaning Fangorn Forest is the Amazon rain forest, the Shire is Canada and Mordor is japan. Racist.

Yep it's what lonewolf said, something to do with it based on some language where the f is pronounced "lve". I checked it on an article before posting and it wrote Gandalf phonetically (gandolf) which, evidentially I copied. Woops! Who cares LOTR is a load of long winded old tosh anyway

Hoo boy. I think you'll find the books with maps community is strong here. And defends its Holy Book vigorously.

What I mean is with a full and frank apology that you’re about to give us this morning I’m sure you can dig yourself out of this rather ugly hole.

I have never read any Tolkein. Or JK Rowling. I did start to read the first Philip Pullman book in His Dark Materials trilogy. I didn't get very far.
What I'm saying is, I'm not a man-child.

I’m with Sheep on this.
Books with maps Club will be round your house later to sort you out.
And I’ve always pronounced Frodo with a Black Country accent.

I was actually joking about LOTR. I am a big fan, even played a bit of LOTRO online.
Star wars films though I will defend the phantom menace until I die. People are far too negative on that film:
1) pod race 2) Darth maul 3) Liam Neeson 4) great soundtrack
Admittedly a lot of that is outweighed by jar jar.

I'm definitely not just saying that because of Map Book nerd club.
I'd stick with it if I meant it. I'm not scared.

That was supposed to to a reply to Destry's 'Shut it down' comment. I'm clearly doing it wrong (again)

Big fan of Tolkien. Massive supporter of Rowling and her little wizard.
I started on Pullman’s trilogy when it was released, got about 50 pages in and thought - I owe this book the respect it’s due, need to be reading this in an armchair in the dusty library - and put it aside until February of this year, when I read through all three books by the pool. It’s not as good as I thought it would be.

You know what would have redeemed those films, Anakin defeating Darth Maul to become Darth Vader

I've read Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman. And C.S. Lewis. And Lloyd Alexander. And Susan Cooper.
Does that make me a man-child? I'm hearing good things about the Orc gender reassignment programme.

I heart Stephen King. Most books, and a few films, are great. And he uses words I mostly understand. Mostly.
